After spending the better half of the '70s as an ersatz prog band given to Neal Schon's noodling, never-ending solos, low record sales, and muddling about on the marginal rock circuit, the members of Journey certainly welcomed the phenomenal chart success and arena tours that came their way in the late '70s. With Captured, a live double-disc from 1980, the newly crowned kings of AOR show off like a formerly fat girl at prom. "Separate Ways" and "Faithfully" were still a few years away, but the band had plenty of hits by this time and they blast through them all, including a blistering version of "Any Way You Want It."

Recorded in 1981, this DVD live set presents Journey at the peak of its powers, on tour in support of the highly successful ESCAPE album (and novelty video game… remember?). The arena-rock band is clearly at home in the cavernous Houston venue, offering up many of the aforementioned record's songs, including the energetic title track, the prom classic "Open Arms," and the anthemic "Don't Stop Believin'." Vocalist Steve Perry belts out the hits in his dramatic signature style and plays the role of hard-rock frontman to perfection, and keyboardist Jonathan Cain, drummer Steve Smith, and guitarist Neal Schon each take lengthy solos, with Schon's moment in the spotlight truly sending fans into a frenzy.

Astronomer Dr. Carl Sagan is host and narrator of this 13-hour series that originally aired on Public Broadcasting Stations in the United States. Dr. Sagan describes the universe in a way that appeals to a mass audience, by using Earth as a reference point, by speaking in terms intelligible to non-scientific people, by relating the exploration of space to that of the Earth by pioneers of old, and by citing such Earth legends as the Library of Alexandria as metaphors for space-related future events. Among Dr. Sagan's favorite topics are the origins of life, the search for life on Mars, the infernal composition of the atmosphere of Venus and a warning about a similar effect taking place on Earth due to global pollution and the "greenhouse effect", the lives of stars, interstellar travel and the effects of attaining the speed of light, the danger of mankind technologically self-destructing, and the search, using radio technology, for intelligent life in deep space.
