Montserrat Caballé as Leonora is precisely what one would hope for. The voice is in near-pristine shape–the occasional attack on a loud high note early on can be vicious, but she sings with unusual commitment (not that the role has many nuances), glorious tone, and her entire arsenal of tricks: long-breathed phrases, diminuendos, high, floated pianissimo, grand chest voice. She even sings most of the words, rarely relying on “ah” sounds for high notes. The sound is huge and major-league and her comportment–acting is the wrong word–is regal. She sings the “Vergine degli angeli” with her back to the audience and the sound is as ethereal as you ever wanted it to be.
Excellent addition to any Prog-Rock music collection
This one is the jewel of Symphonic and Psychedelic-Rock from Latin America in the early seventies.
The name of the band was “Frutos Del País”, and I could compare their music with Procol Harum, which is clearly their main influence.
Pesaro's new offering in 2013 was an off-the-wall production of Rossini's popular comedy, ‘The Italian Girl in Algiers', presented as a Swinging Sixties, James Bond adventure, set in the desert oil fields of the North African coast. Davide Livermore's gag-a-minute, helter-skelter romp followed an alarmingly life-like air-crash, which delivered the ‘Italian girl' from Rome into the clutches of the local oil baron, Mustafa. All three lead singers (Alex Esposito as Mustafa, the high tenor Yijie Shi as the young lover Lindoro, and Anna Goryachova as the agile-voiced mezzo-soprano of the title role) thoroughly distinguished themselves – and the audience roared its approval of the evening's entertainment.
Without any doubt this is one of the great recordings produced by Glossa, as well as being the only recorded occasion in which the two co-founding brothers of the label guitarist José Miguel Moreno and violinist Emilio Moreno have taken part together. In the hands of these fabulous specialists, who are accompanied by a tiple treble guitar and castanets in the famous Fandango, two of Boccherini’s guitar quintets sound here with an unparalleled intensity and brightness.
