From the fanfare of the opening crawl to the abrupt cutaway zing of the closing credits, John Williams' soundtrack to The Force Awakens does not disappoint. Williams has always been an integral part of the Star Wars experience, as familiar as the movies themselves, comforting and nostalgic. The fan anticipation and legacy baggage that came with the seventh film in this iconic series was overwhelming, being the first new film since 2005's Revenge of the Sith and the direct sequel to 1983's Return of the Jedi, yet the results are not crushed by outlandish pressure. For The Force Awakens, Williams began work in late 2014, before recording began in Los Angeles in June 2015 (the first time a Star Wars film score was not recorded at Abbey Road). He enlisted a freelance orchestra and, with the help of William Ross and Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Gustavo Dudamel, produced a 23-song journey connecting the past and the future of the Star Wars universe. Here, Williams combines the old and the new with expert subtlety, creating a lush experience that rewards repeat listens.

With the premier of season two having got underway earlier in the week. I though it a good time to get this review done of Blake Neely’s soundtrack for ‘Supergirl’s’ first season. As fans know. Blake Neely has done the music for pretty much most of the CW superhero shows. And he has managed to somehow do so in such a way that each individual series has its own musical identity. With ‘Supergirl’ he has managed to once more do this. When he first got the gig for ‘Supergirl’ Neely was working on both season 3 of ‘Arrow’ and the first season of ‘The Flash’. So having a huge workload at the time is somewhat of an understatement.

John Williams composed The Five Sacred Trees for Judith LeClair, the principal bassoonist of the New York Philharmonic in 1995, to honor the orchestra's 150th anniversary. The first performance was given by LeClair and the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur on April 12 of that year. The orchestra consists of three flutes and piccolo, two oboes and English horn, two clarinets and bass clarinet, two bassoons and contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones and tuba, timpani, harp, piano, celesta, and strings. Performance time is approximately 26 minutes. Inspiration for the work also comes from the writings of British poet and novelist Robert Graves.

Over the 90-year history of sound film, there have been a handful of instances where a director and a composer have formed a longtime partnership that resulted in a series of classical scores, creating music that stands the test of time. None, however, have been as long or as fruitful as the 43-year collaboration of Steven Spielberg and John Williams. None have encompassed such a wide range of subject matter or, more significantly, have had such an enormous impact on worldwide popular culture.

Simone Pedroni is a brilliant classical pianist and former Van Cliburn Award-Gold Medal winner, while John Williams is the most celebrated film composer of our time. Williams and Pedroni each transcribed about half of material on this album, which premieres Williams' own piano suites from 'Lincoln', and 'The Book Thief', plus Pedroni's own special transcriptions of music from 'Harry Potter', 'Star Wars', 'Schindler's List' and more. The album is a stunning and unique presentation of John Williams' film music, without the usual symphony orchestra, and includes 80 minutes of music.
