Vibraphonist Joe Locke offers a fresh look at works by Henry Mancini on this release, as he leads a powerhouse quartet that includes pianist Billy Childs, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Gene Jackson. His dramatic and spacious treatment of one of Mancini's most beloved works, "Moon River," gives the oft-recorded song a very new sound, while another frequently played number, "Days of Wine and Roses," begins with a dreamy introduction before progressing into a head-shaking hard bop arrangement.

In a rarefied space, Joe Locke continues to evolve, engage and impress. There simply isn't another vibraphonist of his generation with Locke's stellar chops, thorough understanding of history/tradition not just of jazz, but of music, period and ability to build programs based on thematic concepts that not only stand out in his gradually growing discography, but fit contextually within it to create an actual oeuvre, an ever- expanding body of work that represents an artist whose number one priority is always the music always the song. In the last year, since signing with Motéma Music, Locke has released Signing (2012), the forward-looking studio follow-up to his incendiary Live in Seattle (Origin, 2006), with the energetic and electric Joe Locke / Goeffrey Keezer Group, and Wish Upon a Star (2013), his ambitious, largely balladic orchestral record with Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra that presented yet another side to this unerringly inventive vibraphonist's artistry.

High octane, virtuosic and emotionally arresting, this much requested follow-up to 2006's 'Live in Seattle' is considered by Joe Locke and Geoffrey Keezer to be the best recording of their careers so far. Locke and Keezer, have assembled one of the most exciting live performance groups in jazz whose undeniable virtuosity shines brilliantly on this 'live in the studio' recording. The past decade has represented particularly extraordinary artistic growth for vibraphonist Joe Locke as a composer and leader.

"Charade" is another well-loved movie theme that gets a thorough revamping; in Billy Childs' chart the piano alternates between a swirling line that contrasts with the leader as he plays its theme with a straight-ahead bop segment. But the group is not content just to stick to Mancini's best-known songs; "Loss of Love" is a straight-ahead ballad nailed on the first take, while "Whistling Away the Dark" showcases Eddie Gomez's lovely arco bass. When one combines great compositions and inventive, talented musicians such as the member of the Joe Locke Quartet, the results have to be highly recommended.

Love Is A Pendulum is vibraphonist Joe Locke s fourth release on the Harlem-based Motema label. Joined by the members of his quartet - Robert Rodriguez (piano), Terreon Gully (drums) and Ricky Rodriguez (bass) - and special guests, Locke again shows himself to be one of the most forward thinkers in the music today, as well as a man with a bountiful capacity to swing. The centerpiece of the disc is a five-movement suite based on a poem, Love Is A Pendulum, by the writer and musician Barbara Sfraga. Alto and soprano saxophonist Rosario Giuliani joins the band on six tracks. Tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, guitarist Paul Bollenback and steel pan virtuoso Victor Provost are heard on two tunes apiece. German singer Theo Bleckmann adds his distinctive ethereal voice to Love Is A Planchette .

On Entre Cuerdas, Castaneda employs a trio of unlikely parts: harp, trombone and percussion, and approaches his art with the heart and raw energy of a delta blues player combined with the unfettered passion and instrumental acumen of a flamenco guitarist. The music he creates is not of the cerebral sort but rather a mixture of gut and soul emotion and unfettered spiritual joy, aided and abetted by a huge technical proficiency. The set features guest appearances by guitarist John Scofield on the opener, "Sabroson," and vibraphonist Joe Locke on "Colbri" and "Song of Hope." Scofield adds a bluesy grit to Castaneda's passionate world music attack; and Locke, a jazz star finally getting some well-deserved recognition, slips a cool sustain under the harpist's fiery emotion. The smooth integration of the guest slots into the ensemble interplay is one key to the success of this project. There's no grandstanding, no pyrotechnic look-at-me soloing boasts.

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. Henry "Pucho" Brown and his reconstituted nine-piece (plus three guests) Latin Soul Brothers are clearly in no mood to settle down into one bag on this wildly and refreshingly eclectic import CD, where traditional Latin rhythms and various R&B idioms meet and clash. The tone of this free-thinking band is set right at the beginning when rapper McBabee Power accurately informs us that the band is "about to get down with the old/new sound" over the fused Latin/hip-hop groove of "The Latin Soul Brothers."

Pianist/composer Yelena Eckemoff defines radiance as "a state of happiness or confidence when everything around you is shining". On her 2014's album, "A Touch of Radiance", she explores that idea from 10 different perspectives, drawing rich inspiration from memories, emotions, and dreams, and the inner world where all three intersect. Her quintet here's Mark Turner, Joe Locke, George Mraz & Billy Hart. These four gifted artists respond gorgeously to Eckemoff's music, wringing bold colors and deep feeling from pieces that are both airy and intricate.
