Rock Icon Joan Jett, the original riot grrrl, is back. As co-founder of the all-girl, straight-up Rock & Roll group the Runaways, Joan cracked the door for female artists to rock just as hard as the boys. Joan Jett will keep her fire burning with the release of Sinner on her own Blackheart Records. While most of the contents previously appeared on the Japan-only release Naked, some in different mixes, it is her first record of new material released in the United States since Pure and Simple in 1994.

1979 was a transitional year for Joan Jett. In the spring of 79, Toby Mamis, The Runaway's manager at the time, contacted Kenny Laguna, a veteran of many bubble gum hits of the 60's, to write and produce some songs with Jett. Laguna brought in Ritchie Cordell, also a 60's bubble gum veteran, to cowrite and coproduce. In August, Laguna and Cordell flew out to Los Angeles to meet with Jett, and within a few days, had formed the basis for the songs contained on this disc. Raw, spontaneous (recording only took about five days), these tracks are a document of the first sessions of Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna's prolific more than 30 years partnership.

Joan Jett: By playing pure and simple rock & roll without making an explicit issue of her gender, Joan Jett became a figurehead for several generations of female rockers. Jett's brand of rock & roll is loud and stripped-down, yet with overpowering hooks – a combination of the Stones' tough, sinewy image and beat, AC/DC chords, and glam rock hooks. As the numerous covers she has recorded show, she adheres both to rock tradition and breaks with it – she plays classic three-chord rock & roll, yet she also loves the trashy elements (in particular, Gary Glitter) of it as well, and she plays with a defiant sneer. From her first band, the Runaways, through her hit-making days in the '80s with the Blackhearts right until her unexpected revival in the '90s, she hasn't changed her music, yet she's kept her quality control high, making one classic single ("I Love Rock 'n Roll") along the way. ~Allmusic

Sometimes the worst tragedies can give rise to great things. Evil Stig is a side project formed after the murder of The Gits singer Mia Zapata by the surviving band members and Joan Jett to raise money for a Seattle self-defense and support group for women called Home Alive. What began as a one-off gig as part of a series of Home Alive benefits held in Portland, Oregon, turned into a string of shows, songwriting collaborations and eventually this album…
