The four-disc box set Dear Mr. Fantasy digs deep into Jim Capaldi’s legacy, providing a thorough overview of the musician best known as Steve Winwood’s sparring partner in Traffic. Appropriately, there is a hefty chunk of Traffic here along with a good sampling of his solo albums, plus a fair number of rarities ranging from his first group the Hellions to the pre-Traffic bands Revolution and Deep Feeling and a previously unreleased collaboration with George Harrison called “Love’s Got a Hold of Me.” It’s a generous set that will satisfy the devoted while providing several surprises to those who have looked no deeper than Traffic but were always curious about what else Capaldi had to offer.

Pyramid Records' 2003 U.S. release of Jim Capaldi's Living on the Outside differs from the SPV version released in 2001 in that the tracks have been re-sequenced, and the second, longer version of "Anna Julia" is not included. But it is essentially the same record, an album of cleanly produced pop/rock that recalls Capaldi's 1970s heyday, and it doesn't look all the way back to the 1960s. Certainly, "Anna Julia," which features George Harrison on guitar, Ian Paice on drums, and Paul Weller on backing vocals, sounds like it could have come from the '60s.

Jim Capaldi began his solo career just as Traffic had reached their peak, releasing his solo debut Oh How We Danced in early 1972, not long after the high-water marks of John Barleycorn Must Die and The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Oh How We Danced isn't so much a break from Traffic but a detour, one where he's joined by then-current and former bandmates (Steve Winwood and Dave Mason, respectively), assisted by Free's Paul Kossoff, the Move's Trevor Burton, Rick Gresch, Jim Gordon and the Muscle Shoals Horns, among other rock luminaries.

Fierce Heart reunited Jim Capaldi with Steve Winwood and the results are warm to the heart as well as pleasing to the ears. With help from Van Morrison as well, Capaldi put out an album that showed renewed faith in rock after having been living in Brazil absorbing various influences there and raising a family. Winwood's recent smash hits influenced Capaldi to write more upbeat as well as personal songs, highlighted by "That's Love" and "Tonight You're Mine." But whereas Winwood got into the Top Ten with his songs, Capaldi barely made into the Top 200. That was a shame, for there are a lot of comparisons here that should have been explored. For Winwood fans, this album was like an extra helping. For Capaldi fans, it was the main course. ~Allmusic

Traffic was among the most successful of the second wave of "the British invasion" circa 1967. Comprised of Stevie Winwood, Dave Mason, Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi, the band pioneered "group songwriting" (which ultimately led to Mason's early departure. and forged an innovative blend of rock, blues and jazz elements which saw them acheive considerable chart success on both sides of the Atlantic. Jim Capaldi enjoyed a long songwriting collaboration with Winwood, and several of the band's hits were co-written by the team. This loving DVD concert tribute to Capaldi, who passed away in 2005 due to cancer, features a nice array of stars and lesser known, though excellent, session musicians performing in London's legendary Roundhouse, where Traffic itself first shot to fame 40 years ago.

Cardboard sleeve (mini LP) reissue from Traffic featuring the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (fully compatible with standard CD players). Part of a ten-album Traffic SHM-CD Cardboard sleeve (mini LP) reissue series featuring the albums "Mr. Fantasy," "Heaven is in Your Mind," "Traffic," "Last Exit," "John Barleycorn Must Die," "Welcome To The Canteen," "THe Low Spark of High Heeled Boys," "Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory," "On The Road," and "When The Eagle Flies." Since Traffic's debut album, Mr. Fantasy, has been issued in different configurations over the years, a history of those differences is in order. In 1967, the British record industry considered albums and singles separate entities; thus, Mr. Fantasy did not contain the group's three previous Top Ten U.K. hits. Just as the album was being released in the U.K., Traffic split from Dave Mason.
