It is 1951 in America, the second year of the Korean War. Marcus Messner of Newark, New Jersey, is beginning his sophomore year at the pastoral, conservative Winesburg College in Ohio.
Why is he here? Because his father, a hard-working neighborhood butcher, seems to have gone mad - mad with fear and apprehension of the dangers of adult life, the dangers of the world, the dangers he sees in every corner for his beloved boy.
Indignation, the story of a young man's education in life's terrifying chances and bizarre obstructions, is a powerful addition to Roth's investigations of the impact of American history on the life of the vulnerable individual.

John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary, first performed in 2012 in Los Angeles, is something of an expansion on the composer's El Niño, a Passion story adorned with a variety of contemporary themes and musical materials. Like the earlier work, it features a libretto by longtime Adams collaborator Peter Sellars, and it may be sung on-stage as an oratorio or presented as an opera. Mary Magdalene is indeed a central figure in the work, but actually it is more than the trick perspective the title might imply; as with El Niño Sellars incorporates such devices as set pieces featuring poetry by other writers (this time poet Louise Erdrich plays the central role).

A timely, controversial work of grand proportions, The Gospel According To The Other Mary is a new, full-scale reimagining of the Bach oratorio from composer John Adams and iconoclast writer/director Peter Sellars. Adams and Sellars’ previous collaborations included Nixon In China, the most-performed American opera since Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and Dr. Atomic, an opera about the invention of the atomic bomb.

Who would have thought a book about punctuation could cause such a sensation? Certainly not its modest if indignant author, who began her surprise hit motivated by "horror" and "despair" at the current state of British usage: ungrammatical signs ("BOB,S PETS"), headlines ("DEAD SONS PHOTOS MAY BE RELEASED") and band names ("Hear'Say") drove journalist and novelist Truss absolutely batty. But this spirited and wittily instructional little volume, which was a U.K. #1 bestseller, is not a grammar book, Truss insists; like a self-help volume, it "gives you permission to love punctuation." Her approach falls between the descriptive and prescriptive schools of grammar study, but is closer, perhaps, to the latter.

“Too many protest singers, not enough protest songs”, sang Edwyn Collins, but that’s certainly not something that applies to Reg Meuross. From everyday victims crushed by an uncaring society to unsung heroes taking a defiant stand against the darkness of tyranny and oppression, Faraway People goes the distance in turning the spotlight on issues that should not be left in the shadows.
