As a solo artist, Ian Gillan had his share of fine moments in the studio, but it was on-stage where he was at his best – a fact underscored by Live at the Budokan. First released as a two-LP set in 1982 and reissued on a single CD in the early '90s, Budokan boasts strong extended versions of Purple classics like "Smoke on the Water," "Woman from Tokyo," and the moody ballad "Child in Time," as well as some songs he'd recorded for his solo projects, including "Clear Air Turbulence," "Money Lender," and "Over the Hill." The CD's liner notes are atrocious (no personnel are listed), but the performances themselves – though not in a class with Purple's Made in Japan – are generally impressive. If you acquire only one of Gillan's post-Purple recordings, this would be the best choice.

Perhaps the mellowest full-length recording of the Deep Purple vocalist's career, Dreamcatcher is as soft and sincere as its title suggests. Together with guitarist Steve Morris, Gillan put together 12 songs for the 1997 EMI international release that was distributed in the States by Forbidden Records. Despite the fact that Gillan is working with a completely different style of bluesy/country/world/soft rock, things work well. Morris shapes his performances nicely around Gillan's toned-down vocal lines and the material is tightly constructed and intelligent. Hardcore Deep Purple fans might consider Dreamcatcher too fluffy and lovesick for their classic rock taste…

Most listeners will identify Ian Gillan as the main vocal force behind the classic Deep Purple albums of the early '70s: Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Who Do We Think We Are, and Made in Japan. Gillan's off-and-on relationship with the band has allowed him plenty of time to pursue solo work.

For decades, Ian Gillan has been considered one of hard rock/heavy metal's most recognizable and celebrated vocalists. Although he'll always be best known as the frontman of Deep Purple, he's been known to release solo discs and perform solo shows when the mood hits, as evidenced by the 2008 double-disc release Live in Anaheim. Recorded on September 14, 2006 at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA, the live album features a track listing that mixes in Deep Purple classics along with solo Gillan songs.

Ian Gillan became dissatisfied with the final mixes of the album and this delayed its eventual release. What eventually became the album Clear Air Turbulence was remixed at Kingsway before release, but the original mix had taken place at Rockfield Studios in Wales. In 1997 the original mix was released by Angel Air Records under the title The Rockfield Mixes. The Rockfield Mixes represents a cleaner (or at least earlier) version of the album. It also includes an extra track which didn't make it to the original release.

After leaving Deep Purple in June 1973, Ian Gillan had retired from the music business to pursue other business ventures, including motorcycle engines, a country hotel / restaurant (with a guitar shaped swimming pool), and ownership of the Kingsway Recorders studio, where from April 1974 he began to work on his first post-Deep Purple solo tracks.

As perhaps the crowning glory in Spitfire/Eagle's extensive Ian Gillan reissue series, Cherkazoo & Other Stories is at once both the most eagerly anticipated volume by hardcore fans and the lone disc in the series to appeal to a larger audience than Gillan fanatics. Nothing on the collection has been previously been released, yet it is all legendary among Deep Purple and Gillan followers. The first eight tracks (six songs, two dialogues) of the compilation are all taken from the previously unreleased soundtrack to Cherkazoo, a children's story Gillan labored over in the early '70s as Deep Purple were riding the crest of their popularity.
