Jazz vocalist Connie Evingson is known for taking divergent musical paths. Her eclectic catalog of recordings for Minnehaha Music covers such varied themes as Peggy Lee, the Beatles, jazz elders, and most recently, "hot club" music a la Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli (Gypsy in My Soul, '04). Anticipating her next release, one would expect Evingson's music to take another divergent turn. But a chance meeting with a young hot club group from Sweden inspired her to delve deeper into the Django style before moving in a new direction…

Recorded in Stockholm with the Hot Club of Sweden, "Stockholm Sweetnin' " is the follow up to Connie Evingson's highly successful tribute to Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli, "Gypsy in My Soul". Like 'Gypsy in My Soul", "Stockholm Sweetnin' " features tunes typical in the hot club genre ("After You've Gone" , "If I Had You") as well as unlikely adaptations (Abbey Lincoln's "Throw it Away", Michel Legrand's "Windmills of Your Mind").

Guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli hold unique places in the history of jazz music. As the mainstays of the Quintet of The Hot Club Of France, they are the first European musicians to directly influence what was in their heyday a completely American-based genre. The tracks on this compilation have been digitally re-mastered and feature all their biggest tunes.

Hot Club of Saratoga plays high energy gypsy swing in the spirit of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. The driving rhythms under dynamic soloing give the music a life and vibrancy sure to bring a smile and often an irresistible desire to move. With one exception the tunes on this album were either written by, or recorded by, Django Reinhardt at some time in his musical life. Django is most closely associated with The Quintet of the Hot Club of France and with Stephane Grappelli on violin providing the other solo texture in the music. However, Django and Stephane were separated during WWII, finding Django in Paris and Stephane in England. During this time, Django was most often recorded with a clarinetist in place of Grappelli and his violin. After the war he recorded in various configurations including at different times…

Django Reinhardt was the first hugely influential jazz figure to emerge from Europe and he remains the most influential European to this day, with possible competition from Joe Zawinul, George Shearing, John McLaughlin, his old cohort Stephane Grappelli and a bare handful of others. A free-spirited gypsy, Reinhardt wasn't the most reliable person in the world, frequently wandering off into the countryside on a whim. Yet Reinhardt came up with a unique way of propelling the humble acoustic guitar into the front line of a jazz combo in the days before amplification became widespread. He would spin joyous, arcing, marvelously inflected solos above the thrumming base of two rhythm guitars and a bass, with Grappelli's elegantly gliding violin serving as the perfect foil.

For years Federico Britos has performed sets all over the world that include the music of the Hot Club of France and Latin Jazz. Carlomagno Araya, Federico's drummer, had the idea of recording music frequently performed by Stephane Grappelli but in Latin Jazz styles. From this concept, and the friendly contribution of Federico's friend, Nat Chediak, was born the name Hot Club of The Americas. It is a band that performs a unique blend of Latin and Gypsy Jazz.

Shine, the title of this second album of Hot Club De Frank says it all. With a mixture of swing, musette and variety this young Amsterdam Quintet creates a very romantic atmosphere with a wink to the 1930's. The dreamy voice of leadsinger Frank Meester, the tuneful guitar solo's of Harold Berghuis, the stir up improvisations of saxophonist and clarinettist Wim Lammen combined together with the chorus of the other group members make this album very special.
