“I don’t want to put a name on my music. Other people can put a name on what I do. It’s just the union of what I’ve been listening to and what I’ve been learning. It has some elements of classical music, it has some rock, it has some jazz, but I don’t want to give it a name.” —Hiromi Uehara

Move is Hiromi's second "Trio Project" recording with electric bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips, and is a worthy follow-up to 2011's Voice. The pianist/composer defines the compositions on Move as mirroring an average day, starting with the title track, a choppy excursion that finds the trio connecting through a maze of twists and turns. "Brand New Day" is smoother than the previous track but doesn't lose any of the energy. Hiromi switches between piano and an analog synthesizer on "Endeavor," which, unfortunately, sounds like a novelty and cheapens the otherwise enjoyable composition. "Rainmaker" glides between fusion and post-bop. "Margarita!" is fun party funk. The final track, "11:49 PM," brings the day, and this very satisfying session, to its conclusion.

What an astonishing idea: Couple the sensational, genre-defying Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara with the spellbinding Colombian harpist Edmar Castenada, who proves that his traditional Andean folk instrument is as unlimited as his musical imagination. Both these people are charmers: Since her 2003 debut recording Another Mind, Hiromi has dazzled listeners with her explosive keyboard technique and performance style. She is classically trained, but clearly loves the spontaneous and unbound aspects of jazz. Castenada, whose father was a famed harpist, hails from Bogota. He emigrated to New York City in 1994, quickly attracting attention. In his hands the harp’s strings ring forcefully, adding unusual counterpoint to jazz’s encounters with all the world's possibilities. What do Hiromi and Castenada sound like in collaboration? Only a few audiences know—this is their first tour together. Bet on their music being fresh and lively.

Like all creative artists, Hiromi is expanding her horizons and one such way is by touring with Edmar Castenada, an extremely talented and unique harpist. This project captured an incredible performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival in June 2017 that needs to be heard to be believed. Ever since the 2003 release of her debut Telarc CD, 'Another Mind', Hiromi has electrified audiences and critics east and west, with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop parameters, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Most recently, she has had a string of successful albums with the trio of Anthony Jackson on bass and Simon Phillips on drums.

All great human passions whether romantic, creative, inventive, or transformative begin with a single spark. On her tenth album as a leader, Japanese pianist/composer Hiromi traces the path of the flame ignited by that spark as it consumes and inspires. Over the course of nine expressively charged songs, the listener is carried away on an impassioned spiritual journey that might tell the story of a personal discovery, a love affair, or the creation of the music itself. Spark showcases the always thrilling sound of Hiromi's Trio Project with her most narratively sweeping and emotionally overflowing set of music to date. The pianist finds her own spark in her interaction with her triomates of the last five years, contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Chick Corea, The O'Jays) and drummer Simon Phillips (The Who, David Gilmour, Judas Priest, Toto, Jack Bruce).

To say that Hiromi Uehara is a hypnotic performer would be an incredible understatement. With her live DVD, Hiromi Solo Live at Blue Note New York, the pianist electrifies, stimulates, intoxicates. She's done the very same to audiences throughout the United States, Asia and Europe, blowing the lid off of what to expect from a performance with her complete and utter surrender to her art. The DVD allows those of us who lack the fortune to see her in person a window to what we're missing. Hiromi rolls through a number of tracks from Place to Be, her critically-acclaimed solo release, and dedicates herself entirely to the discovery and joy of music. Recorded live on August 20 and 21, 2010, Live at the Blue Note New York features 11 songs and a bonus feature that includes an interview and some footage from her performances around the world.
