The Story of the Animals has been well told across innumerable books and CD compilations over the year - including Raven's own and definitive Absolute Animals 1964-1968 (RVCD-178). The task here then is not to restate the band's history, but to explore the music contained within. Gratefully Dead 1964-1968 is not a "Greatest Hits" package (as Absolute Animals most assuredly is), rather a trawl through a selection of outstanding album cuts and rare B-sides that will give even further insight into the musical depth of one of the most inventive and best loved bands of the 1960s.

Winds of Change opened the psychedelic era in the history of Eric Burdon & the Animals – although Burdon's drug experiences had taken a great leap forward months earlier with his first acid trip, and he and the group had generated some startlingly fresh-sounding singles in the intervening time, it was Winds of Change that plunged the group headfirst into the new music. The record was more or less divided into two distinctly different sides, the first more conceptual and ambitious psychedelic mood pieces and the second comprised of more conventionally structured songs, although even these were hard, mostly bluesy and blues-based rock, their jumping-off point closer to Jimi Hendrix than Sonny Boy Williamson. The band's new era opened with waves washing over the title track, which included sitar and electric violin, while Burdon's voice, awash in reverb, calmly recited a lyric that dropped a lot of major names from blues, jazz, and rock.

Burdon was lead singer of The Animals, formed during 1962 in Newcastle, England…By late 1966 the other original members, including keyboardist Alan Price, had left. Burdon and drummer Barry Jenkins reformed the group as Eric Burdon and The Animals. This group's hits included the ballad "San Franciscan Nights", the grunge–heavy metal-pioneering "When I Was Young", "Monterey", the anti-Vietnam anthem "Sky Pilot" and the progressive cover of "Ring of Fire".

When Jim Dickinson died on August 15, 2009 at the age of 67, his hometown paper, The Memphis Commercial Appeal, ran a lengthy, appreciative obituary chronicling his many achievements and credits. The lead read "The North Mississippi Allstars have lost their father, Bob Dylan has lost a 'brother,' rock and roll has lost one of its great cult heroes and Memphis has lost a musical icon with the death of Jim Dickinson."
