It is a bit strange that none of the eight songs performed on this LP found their way into Adderley's permanent repertoire for the altoist is quite inspired throughout this surprising set. With strong assists from cornetist Nat Adderley, Charles Lloyd on tenor and flute, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, Cannonball plays near his peak; this is certainly the finest album by this particular sextet.

The film centers on the family of Tevye (Topol), a Jewish family living in the town of Anatevka, in Tsarist Russia, in 1905. Anatevka is broken into two sections: a small Orthodox Jewish section; and a larger Orthodox Christian section. Tevye notes that, "We don't bother them, and so far, they don't bother us." Throughout the film, Tevye breaks the fourth wall by talking at times, directly to the audience or to the heavens (to God), for the audience's benefit. Much of the story is also told in musical form…

Based on a book of short fiction called Tevye and his Daughters by Russian writer Solomon Rabinowitch (aka Sholom Aleichem), Fiddler on the Roof tells the story a typical Jewish family living the simple life at the turn of the century. Tevye (Topol) and his wife Golde (Norma Crane) struggle to match their three eldest daughters with suitable husbands from their little Russian village of Anatevka. Yente (Molly Picon), the town's unofficial matchmaker, has word that the local wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf (Paul Mann) has "cast his eye" on Tevye's eldest daughter Tzeitel (Rosalind Harris). She, however, has already nailed the young tailor Motel (Leonard Frey in an Oscar-nominated role) as her husband-to-be. With ever less desirable suitors baying for the hands of his remaining nubile daughters, poor Tevye attempts to hold on to tradition while addressing his children's blind passions. This juggling act, symbolized by a fiddler sawing out a tune perched precariously on a rooftop, has Tevye turning to God for guidance and some kind of uneasy reconciliation.

An album of Broadway hits could easily become a lackluster commercial concession, but Adderley’s Fiddler on the Roof is far from boring. Recorded less than a month after the show opened on Broadway, the title tune fits surprisingly well into the group’s hard-bop style. Cannonball eloquently embellishes the theme and Zawinul weaves a clever countermelody behind the altoist’s lead. The brothers exhibit that exuberant and soulful Adderley bounce, Lloyd ventures into Coltrane-like territory, and Zawinul shows he had something to say on the acoustic piano years before he famously went electric. Brown and Hayes’s engine churns and their persistent prodding moves things along nicely. Jazz.com
