While Rory Block had been a remarkably consistent artist over the course of 30 years, if all it took was for her to leave Rounder Records to make a record like Last Fair Deal, one has to wonder why she didn't do it ages ago. Block is one of the most restless and in-the-field artists in the history of contemporary blues. She has continually dug deeper into the muck and the mire of not only the blues but her personal life, emotionally, spiritually, amorously, and psychically, to bring out what is integral to the creation not re-creation of blues music. She has suffered, endured, and continued to make music that is not only compelling, but necessary for any accurate understanding of the cultural history of the blues tradition because she is perhaps the living female embodiment of it. Last Fair Deal is a record stripped of artifice or niceties. It is raw, feral, tender, sacred, sinful, lusty, and enlightening. On this recording, Block has assembled a collection of songs written, re-arranged, and restored that showcases the guitar as an extension of her physical and spiritual body.

Delta Blues, Pre-War Blues, Country Blues, Slide Guitar Blues

During the last quarter of the 20th century, and thanks largely to Eric Clapton's remarkable devotion to his memory, Robert Leroy Johnson posthumously became the most celebrated Delta blues musician of the pre-WWII era. Among numerous editions of his complete works and various anthologies that combine his recordings with those of his contemporaries and followers, J.S.P.'s The Road to Robert Johnson and Beyond combines many of his essential performances with those by dozens of other blues artists from Blind Lemon Jefferson and Henry Thomas to Muddy Waters and Elmore James. 105 tracks fill four CDs with several decades' worth of strongly steeped blues that trace the African American migration from the deep south on up into Chicago. This is a fine way to savor the recorded evidence, as primary examples from Blind Blake, Charley Patton, Son House, Charlie McCoy, Walter Vincson, Skip James, Ma Rainey, Tampa Red, Kokomo Arnold, Scrapper Blackwell, Leroy Carr, Lonnie Johnson, and Peetie Wheatstraw lead directly to early modern masters like Big Joe Williams, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Bill Broonzy, Johnny Temple, Leroy Foster, Johnny Shines, Homesick James Williamson, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Snooky Pryor, Little Walter, and David Honeyboy Edwards, among many others.

Except for the harmonica that wafts through "Ice Cream Man" and "Lazybones," Lloyd Jones restricts the music on Highway Bound to what he can sing in his grainy tenor and what he can fingerpick on his guitar. That guitar is an acoustic for the most part, though he breaks out an electric for "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" (with slide applied) and "Cry for Me Baby." So, this is Jones' version of the folk-blues, and he plays it well. He is not so concerned with being authentic that he slavishly copies earlier versions of these familiar songs.

David Bixler - Call It a Good Deal (2006)  Music

David Bixler may not be a widely familiar name to jazz fans, though he has held the first alto sax chair in the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, but he deserves much wider recognition for this impressive date of his own. Accompanied by trumpeter Scott Wendholt, guitarist John Hart, bassist Ugonna Ugekwo, and drummer Andy Watson, Bixler leads his group through a session of challenging, infectious originals. "Aiding and Abetting" has an amusing, sinister undercurrent built upon its catchy theme, showcasing each of the musicians in turn. The mysterious "Unraveled" has a haunting, somewhat ominous quality with Hart's sinewy guitar. "Game Face" utilizes a complex repeated motif as its root, with inventive countermelodies played against it. "Scratch and Sniff the Jive" is a funky strut where Bixler uses the full range of his instrument. The bittersweet ballad "He Cries Every Day" is pure magic and deserves lyrics if it doesn't already have some. Highly recommended.
