Following her Carnegie Hall recital debut, The Strad hailed Serbian-French cellist Maja Bogdanovic for an ""outstanding performance of exceptional tonal beauty and great maturity of interpretation."" She has since built an extensive career and an enviable reputation as one of today's leading young cellists, most recently stepping in for Mischa Maisky for a performance of Yusupov's Cello Concerto, with the composer himself conducting. Here, together with long time collaborator Maria Belooussova, Bogdanovic tackles one of the major works of the repertoire in Rachmaninov's sonata, said by the composer to contain equal roles for both cello and piano.

While Guo Wenjing's modernist scores have established him as one of China's most imaginative and individualistic contemporary composers, he can, when the occasion or a commission requires, produce works with a broad popular appeal. The current program features two works in this populist/nationalist idiom. The overture for orchestra and military band, "Riding on the Wind" makes a splendid noise, as well as slyly swiping some gestures from John Williams' score for "The Cowboys." More serious in tone is the B Minor "Heroic" Symphony, op. 39. Guo definitely knows his Shostakovich and Prokofiev - as can be heard in this grandiose Socialist-Realist "Heroic" Symphony. Throughout the score Guo quotes from L'Internationale, Dong Fang Hong (The East is Red), The March of the Volunteers (China's National Anthem) as well as a signature quote from composer Lu Qiming's "Ode to the Red Flag" (a work well-known to all Chinese concert goers).

"Eastern wind" is the first album by Lot Lorien. It was recorded with analog equipment in Balkanton - one of the old bulgarian studios, equiped with good old style expensive analog equipment - multitrack tape recorders, mixers, tube microphones and amplifiers, etc. The recording was made live in the studio - all instruments were played/recorded together, except vocals and additional overdubbed violins, guitars and percussions. The album has little retro sound, the songs were written in the period since foundation of the band till the summer of 2002 when the album was recorded.

These three concertos share a traditional three-movement structure and owe their origins to composers who are acclaimed and highly respected in their field, but this is as far as their similarities go. Frank Tichelis Clarinet Concerto pays homage to Gershwin, Copland and Bernstein in its jazzy influences and song-like central movement, while Brad Warnaars Horn Concerto is based entirely around the diatonic or white scale, reverberating with bell motifs and concluding with jocular musical banter between soloist and orchestra. Behzad Ranjbaran is a native of Iran, and his Flute Concerto is packed with exotic color, expressing contrasts of grief and joy, dream-like tenderness, and festive energy.

The wind quintet made up of the principal players of the Danish National Symphony are fairly well-known from their earlier recordings. And Ralf Gothóni, who joins them for Poulenc's Sextet for Piano and Winds, is a strikingly sensitive pianist, particularly in chamber settings. The program itself is very strong; it comprises basically the core of 20th-century French wind quintet literature: the Poulenc Sextet, Ibert's 'Trois Pièces brèves,' Françaix's First Wind Quintet, and Milhaud's 'Le Cheminée du roi René.'
