A Berlin-set drama centered on a 40-something couple who, separately, fall in love with the same man. They say good things come in threes. Director-writer Tom Tykwer explores this adage in his aptly titled 3, a fresh take on that plot staple of ’30s romps, the love triangle. Narratively and stylistically, Tykwer turns this familiar romantic configuration on its head, crafting an emotionally mature and complex film that’s dense with the stuff of life.
…The opera is very much worth hearing—and owning (though I wish MD&G had supplied an English translation of the libretto). The performances are for the most part on target. With her mind-blowing mix of heavy metal guitar prowess and bluesy, soulful vocals, Orianthi will draw some justifiably well-earned comparisons to such giants of rock guitar as Jimi Hendrix and her own idol, Carlos Santana, on her 2009 sophomore album, Believe – re-released in 2010 as Believe (II) with four different songs than the original version, including a cover of John Waite's "Missing You." That said, her style hews closer to the more finger-frenetic pyrotechnics of such '70s and '80s icons as Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai…
These two disks present a 1982 performance of the Metropolitan Opera's beloved production of Der Rosenkavalier. The staging, directed by Nathaniel Merrill and designed by Robert O'Hearn, is lavishly elegant. James Levine leads a cast that could hardly be bettered. As fanfare's reviewer has written, "No one has ever looked and acted more the Marschallin than Kiri Te Kanawa." Other stars include Tatiana Troyanos as Octavian, Judith Blegen as Sophie, Kurt Moll as Baron Ochs, and Luciano Pavarotti as the Italian tenor.
