The author of the best-seller Nicholas and Alexandra and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Peter the Great has written a richly textured and gripping chronicle of the personal and national rivalries that led to the first great arms race. The British disdained continental alliances and prided themselves on their "Splendid Isolation." But the expanding German fleet was an ominous threat across the North Sea. Britain reached out to her two historic antagonists, France and Russia, and their understandings ripened into the Triple Entente that entered the First World War. Massie paints a mulitdimensional canvas with a crowd of glittering figures: Queen Victoria, the Kaiser, Edward VII, Chancellor von Bulow, Admrial Jacky Fisher, and others.

This volume measures up to the superb standards of the Anatomy of a Ship series, and it is high time we had such a comprehensive and attractive guide to HMS Dreadnought, the prototype for all 20th century battleships. The book includes a narrative history of the ship and description of its features, full technical data, and superb drawings of virtually every detail of the ship's construction and equipment. The one request I would ask only for more interior photos. Highly recommended to historians, naval buffs and serious modellers.

Founded in 1912 by some of the Royal Navy's brightest officers, the quarterly Naval Review has never been subject to official censorship, and its naval members do not need official permission to write for it, so it has always provided an independent, lively and at times outspoken forum for service debate.
