One of the great urban blues/jazz singers of the post World War II period, Jimmy Witherspoon (1923-1997) recorded prolifically until contracting throat cancer in the 1980s. This delightful set was laid down in a London studio in June 1981, before he fell ill, when he was still roaring like a lion. Three members of his backing combo - Peter King (sax), Mike Carr (keyboards) and Jim Mullen (guitar) - were top-flight British jazz musicians perfectly in tune with the singer's needs, while drummer Harold Smith was an American then living in Europe. They're joined by one of Spoon's contemporaries, tenor saxist Hal 'Cornbread' Singer, whose career path resembles the singer's in its fascinating R&B/Jazz duality.

Established in Miami, on life support in L.A., then finally burnished in New York City, the Konrad Paszkudzki Trio's aesthetic can be summed up in three words: mood, sizzle and swing. Their sound is classic yet timeless in its mode of expression, captivating ardent lovers of the jazz idiom and Tin Pan Alley tradition alike. The focus is on standards - tunes collectively known as The Great American Song Book. Without imposing trite gimmicks or relying on overt displays of flash and technical wizardry, the trio stays true to the original musical and lyrical content of the material, with an emphasis on melodic elegance and swinging verve. The influence of Nelson Riddle, Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner and Ahmad Jamal can be felt and heard, but is never blatantly mimicked.

or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | Front/Rear Covers | 890 MB

A name like B.B. Driftwood might lead you to assume that the bearer is a good old Southern bluesman, and this SACD's title wouldn't change that impression. But Driftwood, whose real name is Bengt Skoghoft, is about as far from the Southern US as could be. Yet, listening to Southward Bound, one hears echoes of the South and the style of another Opus 3 artist, Eric Bibb - not a bad starting point. But Driftwood is definitely his own man. He wrote all the songs on this album, and unlike Bibb he adds a slight rock 'n' roll edge to his basic blues base. He also throws in a dash of gospel, country, and R&B. Along with the catchy tunes, these help keep the music fresh and interesting.

As the head of a splendid quartet of Sicilian musicians, Francesco Cafiso presents a work that winds around eight beautiful standards. Cafiso embodies a strong link with the tradition and glorious past of his instrument. In his phrasing there are numerous references to the sacred monsters of jazz history from Charlie Parker to John Coltrane, from Eric Dolphy to Jackie McLean and, at the same time, has the tendency to go beyond the historical-stylistic limits showing great personality and extraordinary ideas.

In April 1976, at the age of 74, the legendary swing saxophonist Benny Waters made a momentous appearance at the internationally famous jazz-blub Stampen often known as “The Pawnshop”, in Stockholm. This album is a memento of this concert and a wonderful musician. Worthy of note is the fact that the pianist on this recording is the late, great and unfortunately the most “underrecorded” Swedish swing piano player Björn Milder – yes, Joakim Milders father! – who was considered by many visiting musicians to be “world class”. And they should know!
