Les Dissonances made its first recordings for Ambroise-Naïve, the critical success of which led to the birth of its own label in March 2014. To celebrate its 10 anniversary, the orchestra’s new Shostakovich album, recorded live at the Opéra de Dijon, is presented complete with an extended tribute piece by Xavier Phillips in memory of his mentor, Mstislav Rostropovich, dedicatee of Shostakovich’s two cello concertos. It follows the label’s high production and design values, offering the disc as part of a hardbound book containing detailed programme notes, Phillips’ essay, artist biographies and monochrome photographs.

This is a jolly coming-of-age story about a 14-year-old boy named Laurent Chevalier who is growing up in bourgeois surroundings in Dijon, France. This is France in the mid-1950s rather than America in the 1990s. Thus, Laurent is unharmed by events which would irreparably shatter the self-esteem of a modern American adolescent: he gets drunk, he smokes, he has sex, he is smothered by his mother, he is ignored by his father, a priest makes a pass at him, he gets rheumatoid fever, etc. There's enough scandalous behavior in this film to make 100 made-for-TV movies, and yet this is a very happy and oddly innocent tale.

When Charles de Brosses, a judge and writer from Dijon, goes to Italy in 1739-1740, he hopes to find History of the Roman Republic, a legendary text written by Salluste, in the first century B.C. but lost since antiquity. His collection will not bear fruit, but in the letters he writes to his friends during his voyage, he gives us the most living portrait of the Italy of his time. Curious about everything, he doesn't omit going to Venice and seeing for himself how the ''nation is crazy'' about music: There are hardly no evenings without an academy somewhere; people rush…to listen with as much enthusiasm as if it were the first time.

Here, there is a kind of music that does not exist in France…Long concertos without solo violin.
