Label: Fantastic Voyage | Tracks: 60 | Rls.date: 2014

2013 two CD collection that focuses on the Soul Music boom of the '60s with this edition spotlighting the city of Detroit. In recent times, any musical mention of Detroit and the 1960s has yielded a default response of 'Motown', and while Hitsville USA, as the Corporation's headquarters on West Grand Boulevard was known, certainly served to put the city firmly on the map, there was a time early in the decade when the Motown Recording Corporation was but a bit-part player in the musical output. Compiled and annotated by Soul music authority Clive Richardson, Soul City Detroit presents a selection of the recordings which served to establish the musical direction of the Motor City into the era which became known as 'Soul'. R&B has continued to be the cover-all generic term for African-American music to this day, but with changing styles and increasing elements of sophistication within the music in the early 1960s, Soul emerged into more common usage.

The last programme in the series on the history of ocean-going liners. With passenger aeroplanes in the ascendant, liner companies responded to dwindling demand in the sixties by building larger and more extravagant ships. It was an audacious move but a highly successful one and major operators still compete to build the biggest and best liner. Today, cruisers are expanding into fully-fledged entertainment centres.
Part 2: Ships of War
Ships of War focuses firstly on the invaluable role that ocean liners played during the First World War, from Winston Churchill ( who was First Lord of the Admiralty at the time ) 'taking the attack to Germany' and the huge vessels being used as 'hospital ships', all the way to the sinking of the Lusitania and the subsequent entry of the Americans into the war. The programme then moves into the immediate post-war years as the greatest migration of people in history, from the old world to the new, continued. The Roaring Twenties really roared and the rich had never had it so good, and the introduction of prohibition saw the liners capitalise by offering 'booze cruises to nowhere'. Then in 1927 France introduced the Ile de France, and a new era in liners began. It was now not so important what the liner looked like from the outside, but more how they were fitted and decorated on the inside. This was the dawn of the Art Deco era and new luxury liners that excluded taste and style would re-define sea travel forever.

The year 1976 was crucial for the evolution of heavy metal, as landmark albums like Rainbow's Rising and Scorpions' Virgin Killer began to reshape the genre. Perhaps none was quite as important as Judas Priest's sophomore effort, Sad Wings of Destiny, which simultaneously took heavy metal to new depths of darkness and new heights of technical precision. Building on the hard prog of bands like Queen and Wishbone Ash, plus the twin-guitar innovations of the latter and Thin Lizzy, Sad Wings fused these new influences with the gothic doom of Black Sabbath, the classical precision of Deep Purple, and the tight riffery of the more compact Led Zeppelin tunes…
