In line with the current great singers, Marina Kaye turns pop into a highly energetic hybrid. She also gave a more urban, more rhythmic form to her songs, interpreted until then in the most international of languages, English. But this time, and it's a first, Marina sings in French, with the elegance that is needed. A first album must be beautiful, says Marina Kaye, the second, daring. This one has a style, a paw. I sought to accompany my audience while following what I deeply wanted to do. Created in Los Angeles, in London, then in Paris.

Here's a pure nostalgic trip down memory lane for many, as Sammy Kaye leads his syrupy big band and vocal choirs though 16 songs that reflect the overly romanticized era of the mid-1900s. The unfortunate thing about Kaye's sound is that he is drowned out by the singers and string arrangements, so you never really get to hear his faux Benny Goodman-style clarinet playing. Still, this is traditional pop/pseudo jazz at its finest, including such well-known songs as "Daddy," "We'll Meet Again," "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone," "Sweet and Lovely," "Harbor Lights," and "As Time Goes By." Perhaps not the best of the big bands in general, but some of the best from this one. It's a good CD, but for specific people with tastes yearning for the good 'ol days.

Mozart’s piano quartets, which are rarely performed or recorded - and still less frequently using period instruments -, are a satisfying fusion of the concerto and the quartet, a perfect balance between the fortepiano and the strings, which variously combine or alternate throughout the piece. The roundness of tone of Daniel Isoir’s fortepiano enriches this permanent dialogue, but the pleasure we derive from listening to the disc is also thanks to the extraordinary bond between the musicians of La Petite Symphonie.

Involving, as it does, three master musicians and a fine chamber orchestra this was never likely to be be other than rewarding. It may not correspond with the ways of playing Mozart at the beginning of the twenty-first century which are fashionable at the beginning of the twenty-first century, but it has virtues – such as high intelligence, sympathy, certainty of purpose, grace, alertness of interplay – which transcend questions of performance practice. Looking at the names of the pianists above, we might be surprised by the presence of Sir Georg Solti, so used are we to thinking of him as a conductor. But the young Solti appeared in public as a pianist from the age of twelve and went on to study piano in Budapest, with Dohnányi and Bartok.

On his new recording Daniel Müller-Schott demonstrates a verve and lively curiosity in his programme, bringing together three composers to form a triangular relationship that is fascinating to experience. The intertwining and superimposition of successive generations is charming in itself: Johann Sebastian Bachs son, born in 1714, was perhaps the greatest composer of his generation; the essential founding father of the Classical era and creator of significant musical genres, born in 1732; and finally, the child prodigy born in 1756.

Through an investigation of the reportage in nineteenth-century English metropolitan newspapers and illustrated journals, this book begins with the question 'Did anti-O'Connell sentiment in the British press lead to "killing remarks," rhetoric that helped the press, government and public opinion distance themselves from the Irish Famine?' The book explores the reportage of events and people in Ireland, focussing first on Daniel O'Connell, and then on debates about the seriousness of the Famine.

In these unconventional, interconnected stories of first-person narratives that also include text messages and Facebook posts, gay men look for love, steal office supplies, hook up on Grindr, bake pies, see therapists, have threesomes with ghosts, and fear happiness. With wry abandon and a beguiling heart, Everything Is Awful and You're a Terrible Person is a deadpan, tragicomic exploration of love, desire, and dysfunction in the twenty-first century.
