On 23 March 1783, an important concert took place in Vienna, playing a considerable role for Mozart’s reputation in the imperial capital, where he had resided since 1781. It is obvious that Mozart wanted to be heard in both what he had composed prior to 1781, as well as in his more recent works. From the Salzburg repertoire, he borrowed the ‘Haffner’ Symphony. To this he added the long concertant movement for wind instruments from the ‘Posthorn’ Serenade.

The Alban Berg Quartett is at the centre of this Mozart collection – quartets, quintets and a chamber version of the piano concerto K 414. The pleasures that await the listener are evoked by Gramophone magazine: “The K 515 and K 516 Quintets are a real treat; the first movement of the G minor has an unusual urgency, and the lovely, balanced phrasing emphasises the singing, melodic nature of the music. The disc of concert performances with Brendel is another high point… In the K 414 Concerto… the quartet's accompaniments are exceptionally refined and intimate… Brendel is in particularly sprightly form in the finale.”

The second of DG’s series of seven Mozart operas conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and initiated by Rolando Villazón. This Così fan tutte enchanted the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus audience when recorded in concert in 2012, with Nézet-Séguin inspiring his stellar cast to feats of vocal derring-do.

This is a series which continues to redefine the standards by which these works should be performed. As before, the music spans most of Mozart’s life, from 1763—when he was just seven years old—to 1782, and (another) unfinished present written for his new wife Constanze.

"…In the hands of Willems and Brautigam, this masterpiece is given a first class performance, particularly in its buoyant Finale, a sonata-rondo in which the piano and orchestra really are cavorting joyfully together. The two concertos on this disc's menu may well offer the best performances of the series so far, yielding first class solo and orchestral playing as well as the best recording of any period Mozart concerto series at this time." ~sa-cd.net
