Saxophonist/clarinetist Chris Speed's two decades descent into New York City's underground jazz realm has proven a multi-pronged mission. Not only has myriad groups he's either led or assumed membership in been vital in levitating the local scene but the multireedist has also helped document the innovators roiling the landscape via his Skirl Records imprint. Speed had a banner year in 2013: a collaboration with intrepid electro-acoustic trio Lama (Lamaçal, Clean Feed); another set of intertwining wizardry from Endangered Blood (Work Your Magic, Skirl); rock/jazz hybrid of Jim Black's AlasNoAxis (Antiheroes, Winter & Winter) and post-jazz sprawl of The Claudia Quintet (September, Cuneiform).

The exquisite, chamber-like, electro-acoustic jazz played by the Luso-Canadian trio Lama caught attentions with its debut release (“Oneiros”) last year. Now, double bassist and bandleader Gonçalo Almeida, trumpeter Susana Santos Silva and drummer Greg Smith are back for more lyrical, but abstract, music with a very special guest: New York tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Chris Speed. The combination couldn’t be more natural: Speed is a master architect of the quiet zone of sound organization, as shown by projects like the exotic Claudia Quintet. His introspective, Warne Marsh-like approach matches very well with Santos Silva’s sometimes melancholic trumpet and flugelhorn.

For over two years, organist Chris Hazelton and his soulful septet, the Boogaloo 7, have held down a wildly successful residency every Friday night at Kansas City's acclaimed Green Lady Lounge. Expanding on the funky sounds popularized by Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland, Lou Donaldson, and others, this group brings a mixture of original tunes and covers, both old and new, that excite and move audiences week after week. With two in-demand 45rpm singles already under their belt, the logical next step was a full length album, and this one catches them in their element: live at the club they call home.

Something that always seems to draw the ire of rock fans is when a veteran artist decides to suddenly change his sound to fit with current trends in hopes of winning over a new set of fans. This certainly isn't the case with Chris de Burgh's 2004 release, The Road to Freedom. Continuing with the same stately and pristine sounds that resulted in a flirtation with the U.S. Top 40 during the mid-'80s ("The Lady in Red," etc.), Freedom could have easily been released in 1984 rather than 2004.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic said, "While Higher Truth never seems as self-consciously confessional as Euphoria Mourning, this mellow simplicity is an attribute: a relaxed Cornell creates a comforting mood piece that's enveloping in its warmth."Collin Brennan of Consequence of Sound stated, "Higher Truth ironically doesn't strive for anything higher. It stakes its claim in the rich soils of the middle ground, a place that values intimacy above innovation, quiet truths above the ones that scream. And it's all the better for it."
