Few pop singers of the 20th century had a greater impact on how vocalists approached their craft than Bing Crosby. Bing was one of the first singers to understand how to use the microphone to his advantage, and his phrasing brought jazz and blues influences into the mainstream in a new way, while maintaining an infectious, upbeat, easygoing vocal personality. In 1956, Crosby recorded the album Songs I Wish I Had Sung the First Time Around…, in which he paid homage to some of his favorite singers by interpreting their signature songs, including Al Jolson ("April Showers"), Nat King Cole ("Mona Lisa"), Louis Armstrong ("Ain't Misbehavin'"), the Mills Brothers ("Paper Doll"), Billy Eckstine ("Prisoner of Love"), and even his frequent comic foil Bob Hope ("Thanks for the Memory"). In 2014 the album was reissued in an expanded edition, featuring an additional ten songs with Crosby covering a handful of pop standards, as well as unreleased session outtakes.

Robert Cameron makes an impressive disk debut here. He's a big-voiced balladeer who can make romance a private matter between singer and listener. There are lush string arrangements to support the mood and allows Cameron to score with special impact on the standards that are made so delightful to hear again.

Mel Tormé and Buddy Rich had been friends for decades prior to finally getting around to recording together. Although largely a Tormé vocal record, the Buddy Rich Orchestra, with guest altoist Phil Woods, is in top form, and the drummer/leader has several solos…

Plush voice, plush style. That, and two singles that have received some notice, are the factors here for Nick Palmer. In addition, Palmer has an impressive way of handling, a ballad, such as "No Arms Can Ever Hold You". At the time of release it has been a bonus to Easy Listening radio stations.

Throughout his career, Count Basie was modest about his own abilities as a pianist, and his success at streamlining his style to the bare essentials often made listeners underrate his playing talents. This 1974 session was a rarity, an opportunity for Basie to be featured in a trio setting (with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Louie Bellson), during which he provides enough variety to hold one's interest and enough technique to lead many to reassess his piano skills.

Stephanie Mills was a native New Yorker having been born and brought up in the borough of Brooklyn. She first tasted success as a singer at the age of 9, winning the famed Apollo Theatre’s amateur hour several weeks in a row, which opened the doors to Broadway as a cast member in “Maggie Flynn” and as opening act for The Isley Brothers. Mills big break came in 1975 when she landed the lead role of Dorothy in the critically acclaimed Broadway musical “The Wiz,” based on The Wizard Of Oz. Jermaine Jackson was suitably impressed and was instrumental in helping her get signed to Motown Records to record her second album after “Movin’ In The Right Direction” on ABC records in 1974.
