Carl Lee Perkins was an American rockabilly musician who recorded most notably at Sun Records Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, beginning during 1954. According to Charlie Daniels, "Carl Perkins' songs personified the rockabilly era, and Carl Perkins' sound personifies the rockabilly sound more so than anybody involved in it, because he never changed". Perkins' songs were recorded by artists (and friends) as influential as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Johnny Cash, which further cemented his place in the history of popular music. Called "the King of Rockabilly", he was inducted into the Rock and Roll, the Rockabilly, and the Nashville Songwriters Halls of Fame; and was a Grammy Hall of Fame Award recipient.

This recording was taped live in Stuttgart in 1981 and was co-produced by Cash's future son in law, Rodney Crowell. This set is special in that it brought three of the original Sun Record stars together at about the same time that the mysterious "million dollar quartet" recordings were beginning to surface. The listener will be grabbed in particular when Lewis weighs in with Whole Lotta Shakin', then the trio and the backup band, Cash's band with W.S.Holland (Perkin's original drummer) and Lewis's sideman, Ken Lovelace cook on some southern gospel standards. Lewis contributes several inspired piano solos and backs up Perkins' vocals in a way that makes him (Perkins) reach back for more.
This disc shows why Cash was, and still is pure country and why Perkins and Lewis could straddle the fence between Country and Rock'n Roll. This recording also lets us hear what might of been had someone had the foresight to capture these greats earlier, say in the early seventies. But better late than never, and that has resulted in this magnificent and very enjoyable album !!

This album is a curious mixture; it isn't really a Carl Perkins album per se' as it is an all-star tribute album with some of the big name guests actually getting to interface with their hero. Both John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix appear via the grave and the tape vaults, contributing their own versions of "Blue Suede Shoes" to the proceedings. And Carl works in tandem with live guests Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Bono, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Fogerty, and Paul Simon in right fine fashion. But the bottom line is that the real star of the show is Perkins himself, just playing and singing in a most masterful and rockin' way. If stars of this magnitude are tipping their hat, Carl shows on this waxing that their idolatry is well placed.

Other companies have Carl Perkins sets, but no one else has all the Sun recordings (complete - with some previously unissued) as well as his Columbia recordings from 1958-1962, and everything he cut for Decca between 1963 and 1965. We start in 1954 with the early rockabilly sound of 'Honky Tonk Gal', then the early country singles, and then 'Blue Suede Shoes' and those classic Sun rockabilly tracks. We have Your True Love at its original tempo and speeded-up for single release, and we have newly discovered alternate takes. Then we have all the early Columbia recordings like 'Where The Rio De Rosa Flows', 'Jive After Five', 'Pink Pedal Pushers', and 'Pointed Toe Shoes', and finally we have the Decca sides from Nashville and London, like 'Big Bad Blues', 'Lonely Heart', and 'Monkey Shine'. The first and last word on early Carl Perkins. Classic indeed.
