In early 1956, Bing Crosby ended the two long-term company affiliations that had defined his career for more than 20 years, leaving his exclusive associations with Paramount Pictures and Decca Records. Thereafter, he made movies and records on a freelance basis. The immediate results were more felicitous for his film work than his recording, as he went to MGM for the successful movie High Society…

This CD reissue brings back one of Annie Ross' most obscure albums of the 1950's. Recorded at a time when the singer was just starting to get known for her work with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, the set is a swinging but largely straight rendition of the score from the play "Gypsy." The all-star backup band ( and what a band ) mostly functions as an ensemble during the Buddy Bregman arrangements.Ross is in excellent form and this is a wonderful sound recording.

Perhaps unfamiliar to some, arranger and composer Buddy Bregman is respected for is work with vocalists Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald (on her landmark album Sings the Cole Porter Song Book). On this session Bregman steps out as a leader and proves he is equally adept in the realm of instrumental jazz. Featured on this mid - Fifties release are Maynard Ferguson, Ben Webster, and (on one track) Stan Getz.

Peter Hammill is one of the formative characters of the progressive rock scene to date. In the beginning of the 1970's he recorded four cumbersome mysterious albums with his band Van der Graaf Generator which never could reach the commercial heights of cognate bands like Genesis or Yes due to their musical intransigence. After several visionary but difficult to access albums, Hammill reformed the quartet for another four albums which introduced a more earthy but not less complex sound. After the band's second end in 1978, on solo albums like "The Future Now", "ph7" or "A Black Box" Hammill experimented extensively in the studio and acquired the latest techniques like i.e. early forms of sampling; one of the most breath-taking results being the 20 minute long soundscape 'Flight'…

Label: Reservoir | Rel:1995

Gutarist Peter Leitch's soft and inviting tone sometimes hides the fact that he is often a hard-swinging and burning soloist. For this Reservoir CD, he holds his own with such top players as trumpeter Claudio Roditi, altoist Gary Bartz, the reeds of Jed Levy, pianist John Hicks, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. The impressive septet performs four of Leitch's originals (including "Song for Jobim") and a song apiece by Bartz, Smith, Harold Land, Charles Mingus ("Duke Ellington's Sound of Love") and Cole Porter ("I Concentrate on You"). This is excellent hard bop music that lives up to its potential.
