Dick Hyman, one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians alive, is especially known as an authority on early jazz. After a lifetime of playing and studying the music of Bix Beiderbecke, Hyman announced he’d like to record for RR a solo program of music associated with Bix, including all five original pieces Bix wrote for piano. (Most likely, these are a recorded first.) Hyman arranged other numbers Bix performed with various groups, and plays and improvises upon these in his distinctive, brilliant style. The title track is an infectious Hyman original reminiscent of the period. An attractive bonus is a piano four-hands performance with Hyman’s friend and stride authority, Mike Lipskin.

The Vintage Recording Project was set up to replicate recording techniques used in the late 1920sand 1930s. Over six CDs the project has developed into looking at repertoire. In the early days of Jazz there were rumours of collaborations which have some basis in fact, but which have passed into folklore. One such collaboration was a jam session held following a meeting of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke.

Each box contains 25 slipcase CDs, a booklet (up to 186 pages) and an index. The booklets contain extensive notes (Eng/Fr) with recording dates and line-ups. 31 hours of music in each box, totalling 1677 tracks Each track has been restored and mastered from original sources. The only reason I can think of for there not yet being a review of these four boxed sets, is that those who own them are just too busy having one hell of a blast listening to them. Some people moan about the 50 year copyright law for audio recordings in Europe, but without it this highly entertaining, eye-opening and educational undertaking could never have taken place. These 100 discs (spread over four boxed sets of 25 discs) tell the story of jazz from 1898 to 1959.

Hackett was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He made his name as a follower of the legendary cornet player Bix Beiderbecke: Benny Goodman hired him to recreate Bix's famous "I'm Coming Virginia" solo at his (Goodman's) 1938 Carnegie Hall concert. It seems that from then on, Hackett was determined to shake off the "new Bix" tag, and always proclaimed that he was a "Louis (Armstrong) man."
He was in considerable debt and difficulties by the early 1940s, following the commercial failure of his big band.[citation needed] To make matters worse, his lip was in bad shape, making it difficult for him to play the trumpet / cornet. Glenn Miller came to Hackett's rescue, offering him a job as a guitarist with the Miller Band. Despite his lip problems, Hackett could still play occasional - beautiful - short solos, and can be heard playing a famous one with the Glenn Miller Band on "A String of Pearls." His lip must have recovered because, during the 1950s he made a series of albums of ballads with a full string orchestra, conducted by Jackie Gleason, exhibiting a gorgeous, dreamy, vibrato-free sound. In his later years, he continued to perform in a dixieland style even as trends in jazz changed. Bobby Hackett's idol was Louis Armstrong although he played in a style more reminiscent of Bix Beiderbecke. Bobby Hackett died June 7,1976 from a heart attack.
