Japanese outfit Asturias started out as the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and composer Yoh Ohyama. He started writing material for an album in 1987, and in 1988 the debut album "Circle in the Forest" was issued on King Records, one of the major record labels in Japan. The sophomore effort "Brilliant Streams" followed in 1990. Overall, strong melodies are in greater abundance here, with the main hook of "Nostalgia" being most reminiscent of "Circle". "Highland" ameliorates the strongest achievements of Mike Oldfield's "Incantations" by focusing less on driving home the same point and more on letting listeners make their own…

…Asturias became an official project in 1987, with album releases of Circle in the Forest (1988), Brilliant Streams (1990), and Cryptogram Illusion (1993) through King Records, one of Japan’s major labels. On these three albums Yoh performed on a number of instruments himself on most of the tracks, in the style of a solo project with guests, which included prominent musicians in prog circles such as Akira Hanamoto and Haruhiko Tsuda from Shingetsu, on keyboards and guitars respectively, and Yoko Ueno from Zabadak. All three albums are highly acclaimed as Japan’s answer to Mike Oldfield…
