Traditionally, the natural sciences have been divided into two branches: the biological sciences and the physical sciences. Today, an increasing number of scientists are addressing problems lying at the intersection of the two. These problems are most often biological in nature, but examining them through the lens of the physical sciences can yield exciting results and opportunities.

The Astronomy of Levi ben Gerson (1288-1344)

The Astronomy of Levi ben Gerson (1288-1344)

The Astronomy of Levi ben Gerson (1288-1344): A Critical Edition of Chapters 1-20 with Translation and Commentary (Studies in the History of Mathematics and Physical Sciences) by Bernard R. Goldstein
English | 1985 | ISBN: 1461385717 | 312 Pages | PDF | 8 MB

It would seem that S. Munk was the first modern scholar to draw attention to the significance of Levi ben Gerson's Astronomy, surely the most original work on astronomy written in Hebrew in the Middle Ages. Munk (1859, p. 500) called for a specialist to undertake a serious study of this work, but there was little response to his plea in the succeeding century.

Nasir al-Din al-Tusi's Memoir on Astronomy

Nasir al-Din al-Tusi's Memoir on Astronomy (al-Tadhkira fi cilm al-hay'a): Volume I: Introduction, Edition, and Translation (Sources in the History of Mathematics and Physical Sciences) by F. Jamil Ragep
English | 1993 | ISBN: 1475722435 | 371 Pages | PDF | 13 MB

I was introduced to Tiisi: and his Tadhkira some 19 years ago. That first meeting was neither happy nor auspicious. My graduate student notes from the time indicate a certain level of confusion and frustration; I seem to have had trouble with such words as tadwlr (epicycle), which was not to be found in my standard dictionary, and with the concept of solid-sphere astronomy, which, when found, was pooh-poohed in the standard sources.

Kepler's Physical Astronomy

Kepler's Physical Astronomy

Kepler's Physical Astronomy (Studies in the History of Mathematics and Physical Sciences) by Bruce Stephenson
English | 1987 | ISBN: 1461387396 | 218 Pages | PDF | 4 MB

Kepler's Physical Astronomy is an account of Kepler's reformulation of astronomy as a physical science, and of his successful use of (incorrect) physics as a guide in his astronomical discoveries. It presents the only reliable account of the internal logic of Kepler's so-called first and second laws, showing how and to what extent Kepler thought he had derived them from his physical principles.
