Without second guitarist David Knopfler, Dire Straits began to move away from its roots rock origins into a jazzier variation of country-rock and singer/songwriter folk-rock. Naturally, this means that Mark Knopfler's ambitions as a songwriter are growing, as the storytelling pretensions of Making Movies indicate…

The term "rock legend" certainly applies to Ian Gillan. Fronting such bands as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath over the years, he has proved that he has an incredible voice and has been a very influential force in the rock genre. This solo album features both his incredible vocal talents and some fine songwriting. The material varies from hard rock that feels a bit like Deep Purple to more balladic sort of works. In fact, one of the ballads on the disc is an incredibly emotional piece that is one of the best cuts on the CD.

This release could be a tad MOR for some folks. There is none of that crunchy Gillan-band stuff. The instrumentation is pretty slick and it all seems geared for FM radio. That said, closer examination (and repeated listenings) offers up a world of pleasures. This is some sophisticated rock n roll. "Talking to You" could be the happiest sounding song about one's despair at seeing a friend die. "Loving on Borrowed Time" has some real pathos. Sure, it's the same old leaving a groupie behind song, but it sure is tasty. Ian really belts it out on this one and makes a convincing case for his infidelities! "No More Cane on the Brazos" is arguably Ian's best solo performance. The CD is worth this song alone. I have never heard him sing so "deep". All in all, "Naked Thunder" deserves several listenings and attention to lyrics. He may lay off the screams a bit, but not a problem at all. Very deep, indeed.

The band was founded in Saddleworth, a civil parish now in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in September 1966 by John Lees, Les Holroyd, Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme, and Mel Pritchard (1948-2004). Time Honoured Ghosts is an album released by English rockgroup Barclay James Harvest in 1975. The title was suggested by the wife of Harvey Lisburg, the band's manager at the time, though it is believe that she was quoting from another unknown source. It was recorded between May and July 1975 at the "His Masters Wheels" studio in San Francisco. It was produced by Elliot Mazer and released in October on the Polydor Records label.

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. A beautiful late 70s set from reedman Marion Brown – maybe not as all-out adventurous as some of his earliest material, but still filled with a strong sense of spirit and soul! The group here is a bit unusual – as Brown's alto is set up with the guitar of Brandon K Ross, bass of Jack Gregg, and drums of Steve McCraven – in a format that often has the ringing tones of Ross' guitar working nicely with the introspective tones of Brown's alto sax. Some tunes are spacious and have a sense of sonic exploration, others are a bit more swinging, with some unusual rhythmic inflections from the guitar – and McCraven's nicely open sensibilities on the drums. And while the whole thing maybe isn't as all-out avant, the shift is actually a nice one in showing some of Brown's more personal, spiritual currents too.
