Consistent, workmanlike big band arrangements and solos were on display throughout the eight cuts featured on Seems Like Old Times, a 1987 CD spotlighting the Ashley Alexander Big Band. This was Alexander's fourth big band release, and it didn't differ from the others. The songs included versions of Charlie Shavers, Jule Styne, and Antonio Carlos Jobim classics, plus three supplied by keyboardist Frank Mantooth, who doubled as the band's principal arranger.

Put on your dancing shoes and jive the night away. Standards like In the Mood and When the Saints Come Marching In will put a new lift in your step. Instrumentation includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones, French horn, piano, guitar, bass & drums. When I was a kid, back in the '60's, my dad listened to a group of records called "The Swing Era"… I believe from Time-Life. I grew up loving the swing rhythms and stylings of "Little Brown Jug", "Take The 'A' Train, and "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" as they popped and hissed out of our giant console stereo. I've tried digitally remastered versions of the originals, like "Glenn Miller-A Memorial", but have always been disappointed by, well, the pops and hiss, and the generally low fidelity that these great old songs were recorded with… not their fault! But "In The Big Band Mood" faithfully recaptures the music in new recordings by Michael Maxwell and his orchestra, and their rendition of what I consider to be one of the most perfect pieces of music of all time - "In The Mood" - is excellent. I highly recommend this album!

In which each of its members brings experience, know-how. And musical and vital trajectory to a common project where the fundamental meeting point is the passion for quality music. The elegance of the chosen repertoire is another point of cohesion, and of enjoyment. It sounds round, with a lot of swing!

Tim Davies, who led a big band in his native Australia before relocating to Los Angeles in 2000, reprises that experience on parts of The Expensive Train Set, returning home to supervise his Melbourne ensemble on four selections, presiding over his Los Angeles-based band on four others, and somehow managing to blend the two groups together as one on the ambitious title song, which Davies calls "the centerpiece of the album," as well it should be. Whereas Davies' previous album, Dialmentia, was focused in part on his recurring nightmares, Train Set undrapes a more amiable theme, the singular experience of becoming a father, as Davies recently did. In fact, the opening number, "Conceivilization," is arranged to depict in musical terms how shall we say this? the act of making love, with two soloists in each movement playing the part of the lovers. Be sure not to miss the exciting climax!

Asian-American baritone saxophonist Fred Ho has been a champion of freedom and expressionism in modern creative jazz for some time. A continuing battle with cancer has inspired him to assemble the Green Monster Big Band, with reference to the famed left-field wall at Fenway Park in Boston, but more directly related to the huge sound and diverse ideas this juggernaut ensemble represents. Ho is influenced by the '60s big bands, television or movie themes, and the psychedelic rock he grew up with, all present on this ambitious program.

Grapefruit Moon: The Songs of Tom Waits is Southside's tribute to one of his favorite songwriters, but also a pet sound: big band music. The idea to marry the brassy, ballsy sound of a big band to Tom Waits' cinematic, character-driven songs has been sitting in the back of Southside's mind for sometime.

The title Swing Is Here would have been more appropriate for the 1930s instead of 1960 when this album was originally issued, and the big-band era had long since waned. Yet vibraphonist Terry Gibbs kept the home fires burning out in California with this exceptional orchestra of cool jazz giants playing a stack of standards and modern compositions by Bill Holman or Gibbs, and one look back with an Artie Shaw number. What is most interesting about these arrangements is that they are always different in emphasizing the fleet, dampened sound of Gibbs in contrast, apart from, or in tandem with the woodwinds and brass instruments.

During the war against advanced colo-rectal cancer (from 2006), which included two primary tumors and two recurrences, Fred Ho, hammered by massive chemo and radiation, found inspiration in the fight for his life from watching movies of The Greatest, Muhammad Ali. Ali s bold, militant, defiant and spirited resistance to the forces of American racism, combined with his élan, grace and humor (both poetical and personal), his indisputable athletic abilities and genius, and the inspiration to the world s peoples (especially the oppressed) and their embrace of him, served as constant inspiration to Fred Ho. During one of his recovery periods, Ho decided to compose a work for his Green Monster Big Band to honor The Greatest.
