Nigh on 60 years after his death, the Swiss composer, born in 1880 of Jewish origin, naturalized American in 1924, remains relatively little known by the general public and music lovers alike. Yet his music, full of lyricism, drama, virtuosity, poetry, has all it takes to please. His language combines tonality, bitonality, atonality, elements inherited from the Jewish musical tradition as well as allusions to movie style American music.

Baroque ensemble Pallade Musica offers a glimpse into the world of Otto Ernst Gregorius Schieferlein, a German Baroque composer. Precious little is known of Schieferlein. He was born in 1704, in Buxtehude, a city near Hamburg, where he died on in 1787. Among the few works that have been attributed to Schieferlein are a wedding cantata, and the three trio sonatas that are recorded here for the first time. They have survived in an 18th-century manuscript copy from the library of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

The Doppler brothers played a dominant role in the Imperial-Royal Monarchy’s musical life as composers, conductors, musicians and orchestral soloists. They were on good terms with acknowledged artists of the era, such as Ferenc Liszt and Ferenc Erkel, as well as Jozsef Bajza, director of the Budapest National Theatre. This is the fourth release in a set of 10 CDs comprising the Dopplers’ complete music for flute(s), including various arrangements. Flautist Claudi Arimany spent decades researching this project, inspiring many famous musicians to become involved in its realisation.

Going well beyond mere historical interest, this album unveils the charms of a repertoire that delighted Parisian concert halls and salons throughout the 19th century. It demonstrates how the viola finally emerged from the violin’s shadow thanks to virtuoso playing, now resuscitated by the talent of Antoine Tamestit and Cédric Tiberghien in pieces which offer much more than the exquisite languors of bel canto.

This release is part of a set of Bach cantata recordings by the Belgian group Il Gardellino and director Marcel Ponseele: not an entire new Bach cantata cycle but a set of thematically oriented recordings that may also include works by other composers. "De profundis" (from the depths) offers three cantatas based on Psalm 130, which begins with the words "From the depths I cry to thee, Lord" and was translated into German in several ways.
