The Great Lead Water Pipe Disaster  eBooks & eLearning

The Great Lead Water Pipe Disaster

The Great Lead Water Pipe Disaster by Werner Troesken
English | Dec. 1, 2006 | ISBN: 0262201674 | 329 Pages | PDF | 2 MB

In The Great Lead Water Pipe Disaster, Werner Troesken looks at a long-running environmental and public health catastrophe: 150 years of lead pipes in local water systems and the associated sickness, premature death, political inaction, and social denial. The harmful effects of lead water pipes became apparent almost as soon as cities the world over began to install them. Doctors and scientists noted cases of acute illness and death attributable to lead in public water beginning in the middle of the nineteenth century, and an editorial in the New York Herald called for the city to study the matter after a bizarre illness made headlines in 1868. But officials took no action for many years. New York City, for example, did not take any steps to reduce lead levels in water until 1992, long after the most serious damage had been done. By then, in any case, much of the old lead pipe had been replaced with safer materials.
Decision Support for Natural Disasters and Intentional Threats to Water Security

Decision Support for Natural Disasters and Intentional Threats to Water Security (NATO Science for Peace and Security Series C: Environmental Security) by Tissa Illangasekare
English | June 9, 2009 | ISBN: 9048127122 9048127114 | 258 Pages | PDF | 24 MB

The NATO Advanced Research Workshop, “Decision Support for Natural Disasters and Intentional Threats to Water Security” was the result of close collaboration between environmental, security, water resource, and health officials in the United States and Croatia. The premise of the Workshop is that multiple, disparate threats to water security exist, and that shared decision support structures provide effective means for avoiding and responding to potential or actual situations.

The Blue Death: Disease, Disaster, and the Water We Drink

The Blue Death: Disease, Disaster, and the Water We Drink[ THE BLUE DEATH: DISEASE, DISASTER, AND THE WATER WE DRINK ] by Morris, Robert D. (Author) Jul-31-07[ Hardcover ] by Robert D. Morris
English | 2007 | ISBN: 1851685758 | 321 Pages | PDF | 1 MB

Drinking water. In the walls, beneath the streets, around the world, it races through unseen pipes to fi ll tens of billions of glasses, cups, and bottles each day and to quench that most essential of human drives, thirst. For millions of years, intimate knowledge about the source of our water was among the most important bits of information our ancestors carried. Today that intimacy is lost. We turn on a tap and water flows as if by magic.
Regulating Water and Sanitation for the Poor: Economic Regulation for Public and Private Partnerships

Regulating Water and Sanitation for the Poor: Economic Regulation for Public and Private Partnerships by Richard Franceys
English | Aug. 1, 2008 | ISBN: 1844076172 | 305 Pages | PDF | 2 MB

The aim of this book is to present the potential benefits as well as the challenges of introducing a more formal economic regulatory process into the urban water sector arena in lower-income countries. There is a particular focus upon the impact this may have on the poorest, the informal, slum and shanty dwellers of the rapidly growing cities. Economic regulation, usually introduced in the context of private operation of monopoly water supply, can deliver objectivity and transparency in the price-setting process for public as well as private providers.
Satellite Monitoring of Inland and Coastal Water Quality: Retrospection, Introspection, Future Directions

Satellite Monitoring of Inland and Coastal Water Quality: Retrospection, Introspection, Future Directions by Robert P. Bukata
English | May 26, 2005 | ISBN: 0849333563 | 281 Pages | PDF | 4 MB

Satellite Monitoring of Inland and Coastal Water Quality: Retrospection, Introspection, Future Directions reviews how aquatic optics models can convert remote determinations of water color into accurate assessments of water quality. This book illustrates how this conversion can generate products of value for the environmental monitoring of optically complex inland and coastal waters.

Mine Water Hydrogeology and Geochemistry

Mine Water Hydrogeology and Geochemistry (Special Publication) (No. 198) by N. S. Robins
English | Sep. 1, 2002 | ISBN: 1862391130 | 405 Pages | PDF | 29 MB

This book is a collection of keynote reviews and detailed case-studies covering the principal areas of active research and state-of-the-art industrial practice in the field of mine water management. It addresses both issues of water quantity (such as the impact of longwall mining on the piezometry and hydraulic properties of overlying aquifers) and water quality (spanning an array of sites from deep coal mines to open-pit base metal mines), as well as a wealth of hybrid, integrated studies in which hydrogeological and geochemical aspects are considered (and managed) together. The papers presented in this book are intended for practising geologists and engineers involved in the management of active and abandoned mine sites all over the world. It is also of interest to academic geoscientists and students with interests in low-temperature aqueous geochemistry and the hydrogeology of complex, quasi-karstic groundwater flow systems.
