Votum is a Polish progressive rock band that started in 2003 as a heavy metal band, but between times developed to a heavy progressive band on their album "Time Must Have A Stop" (2008). "Metafiction" is the second album of Votum. Most of the heavy sounds of their previous highlight have been traded for more atmospheric and a bit dark sounds on this album. "Metafiction" is an LP friendly 45 minutes of progressive rock that is meant to appeal to fans of Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Opeth, Anathema.

Harvest Moon continues the Votum tradition of giving melancholy atmospheres, some well-done prog metal sections, and (most importantly to them) soul-splitting lyrics. Yes, Votum has some of the best lyrics in the business. They really grab your heart by the neck and force you to feel something…

Lizard is a distinguished prog band that has kept its flame going for a few decades now, releasing a few spectacular albums. Guitarist and vocalist Damian Bydlinski as well as bassist Janusz Tanistra still lead the group from Poland but have added new blood on guitars, keyboards and drums with this rather sparkling album. The inspiration to create a brooding, aggressive and pulsating work is obvious from the get- go, Damian never compromising in singing in his native language which gives their music so much personality and creative merit. Tanistra shows off his considerable bass skills with a trebly sound that harkens back to Squire days but within his very own style. The disc is divided into 5 chapters but must be listened to as a whole, which was clearly the intention. Source material (yeah, its prog!) is the celebrated Russian novel 'The Master and Margarita' by Mikhael Bulgakov…

Katatonia have achieved legendary status in the realm of Swedish metal, with an evolution not dissimilar to English counterparts Anathema and Paradise Lost. One element that has remained intact throughout their various transformations is their masterful use of atmosphere, even if the compositional component has been largely streamlined by now. "The Fall of Hearts" is thankfully a largely adventurous offering, moreso than anything the band has recorded in many years. This latest by the morose quintet features plenty of surprising songwriting choices, including some of the their most bold musical explorations in quite some time…

Progressive Metal

Tenebris is yet another in a long line of cool Polish prog metal bands and they’ve actually been around in one form or another since the early 90s (after a short break around 2004). Now after four years, the band has come out with Alpha Orionis and what a difference a few years can make! This is a much more intricate and varied album with a ton to offer any prog metal fan. Tenebris is a five-piece band (with the addition of keyboards to the standard lineup) and the guys here are seriously interested in all things outer space, hence the pics on their albums of aliens or, as on the new album, a cool picture of indigenous peoples (Mayan perhaps?) being greeted by a tall four-armed visitor. t’s been a great year so far for Polish prog metal with the releases of the new Riverside and DispersE albums along with the upcoming new album by Votum. Somehow I get the feeling that Tenebris is not as well-known as these other stellar groups but I hope that’ll be changing soon with the release of this excellent new album.
