Van Halen didn't release a live album until 1993, by which time David Lee Roth had long since left the group. Tokyo Dome in Concert arrived some 22 years later, by which time Diamond Dave had returned to the fold and Michael Anthony had left, replaced by Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang…

A bootleg long gone circulating among the iconic band's followers, Van Halen's performance in Toronto, Canada in August 1995 is now officially out via Showtime Movies. As usual, only the actual gig is depicted - no extras or even a plain sheet is around - and the filming is not matching today's standards, as you can imagine. In a smart price you can deal with it anyway, I guess.

It will forever remain a mystery why the mighty original Van Halen line-up never released a live recording, especially because they were one of the better live hard rock bands to hit the stage. The first official live Van Halen recording was the 1993 two-CD set, LIVE: RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, which collected 24 tracks from various tours with singer Sammy Hagar.

And again VH's David Lee Roth era… For these 2015 Remastered Releases, Van Halen enlisted the help of mastering enginer Chris Bellman, who remastered the original albums for Bernie Grundman Studios, Hollywood, CA. The remasters have been cut straight from the original quarter-inch tapes.

With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what the electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals.

Fair Warning was such a dark, intense record that Van Halen almost had no choice but to lighten up on their next album, and 1982's Diver Down is indeed much lighter than its predecessor…

Of all the early Van Halen records, Fair Warning often gets overlooked – partially because it's a dark, strange beast, partially because it lacks any song as purely fun as the hits from the first three records. Because of that, there were no hits from Fair Warning that turned into radio anthems; only "Unchained" and, to a lesser extent, the grinding opener, "Mean Street," rank among the group's best-known songs, and they're not as monumental as "And the Cradle Will Rock," from the preceding album, Women and Children First…

After two pure party albums, the inevitable had to happen: it was time for Van Halen to mature, or at least get a little serious.
