Schoolhouse Funk is a 2000 compilation CD released by Cali-Tex. The credits say it was compiled by Motorcycle John, who is better known on the surface as producer DJ Shadow, who is an active collector of finding odd American high school recordings to locate hidden funk and soul nuggets. The album is a collection of his choices, some quirky but others revealing a sense of musicality from teenagers ready to enter the big world. The entire album does not feature any credits for what high school bands played what song but a few of them have been discovered through musical sleuths on the internet. Highlights include cover versions of songs by Paul McCartney, War, Herbie Hancock, and Dennis Coffey.

As soul music moved into the early '70s, it became dominated by smoother sounds and polished productions, picking up its cues from Motown, Chicago soul, and uptown soul. By the beginning of the decade, soul was fracturing in a manner similar to pop/rock, as pop-soul, funk, vocal groups, string-laden Philly soul, and sexy Memphis soul became just a few of the many different subgenres to surface. Often, the productions on these records were much more polished than '60s productions, boasting sound effects, synthesizers, electric keyboards, echoes, horn sections, acoustic guitars, and strings.

Funk is a music genre that originated in the mid-1960s when African American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and rhythm and blues (R&B). Funk de-emphasizes melody and chord progressions used in other related genres and brings a strong rhythmic groove of a bass line played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a drummer to the foreground. Like much of African-inspired music, funk typically consists of a complex groove with rhythm instruments playing interlocking grooves. Funk uses the same richly-colored extended chords found in bebop jazz, such as minor chords with added sevenths and elevenths, or dominant seventh chords with altered ninths.

Soul Jazz Records’ ‘Boombox 2’ is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979 – 83, with barely a household name in sight. Featured here are some the earliest hip hop records that came out of New York City following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘Rapper’s Delight’ by the Sugarhill Gang, in September 1979. Artists and producers alike tried to jump aboard the new commercial possibilities of hip hop. By the end of the year there were 30 hip hop singles, all released by independent New York labels.
