I created the name Lafayette Afro Rock Band. I had some experience in the domain and knew that we needed a complicated name in order for it to be registered. Anyway, I got the idea for this name using Lafayette Hudson’s first name the bassist of the group and called him explaining that there was now a group called the Lafayette Afro Rock Band. We made Soul Makossa, and Malik right after. The recordings of the Lafayette Afro Rock Band and Ice have been compiled on a new release, dropping October 28 on Manifesto Records.

This is a collection of mostly re-recordings and live versions. Some of tracks are familiar but there are quite a few less common tracks and that is what makes it interesting to me. I believe there are 20 VA collections in this series.

There is a Californian myth of sun, sand and tanned blondes of both sexes enjoying a life of carefree exuberance. For black America, the Golden State offered a different dream and throughout the 20th century the lure of a booming economy attracted millions to the most populous state in the Union. Where there is money, an entertainment industry invariably appears to relieve people of it, and all over California especially in Los Angeles and San Francisco’s Bay Area clubs, bars and record labels sprang up. In the immediate post-WWII years these attracted black musicians from all over the country hoping to make their fortune.

Of all the "70s Soul" albums crowding the market and the shelves, this one is among the best. From Barry White's opening plea to Jerry Butler's closing beseachment, the album flows like butter. Butter for your ears, that is. You really can't go wrong with the likes of Luther Ingram gracing your album, dig? If lovin' you is wrong, I don't wanna be right; if bein right means needing ANOTHER soul album besides this one then I'd rather live a wrongdoin life.

With 21 slabs of pure, joyous funk complete with huge drums, blistering horn charts, pulsing basslines, stacks of wah-wah fuzz guitars, and enough energy and rhythm to rearrange the stratosphere, this delightful set of rare and independent California funk releases from the late '60s and early '70s is as much a nonstop dance party as it is an affirming revelation. It never stops grooving from the opener, Water Color’s “All Bundled into One,” a release so rare only one copy is known to exist, to the closer, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” by Mr. Clean & the Soul Inc., this is one powerful document. None of these sides was a national hit, and most didn’t even crack the local airwaves, but it’s not because they lack quality. There is so much to marvel at here, including the above-mentioned tracks as well as Arthur Monday’s thundering and slightly spooky “What Goes Around Comes Around” and the charging horns and percolating guitar of J.G.D. & the New Breed’s “North Richmond Breakaway.” It’s joyous funk as deep as the ocean is blue. You can’t go wrong with this one.
