There’s something magical about open string voicings and you simply can’t have too many of them in your chord vocabulary. They’re challenging to construct because the open strings have to be harmonized by key and chord type. These 15 studies reveal the underlying formulas. If Forest Gump’s shrimp-loving Bubba played guitar, his take on chords might go something like this, ”You can strum ‘em, fingerpick ‘em, arpeggiate ‘em, mute ‘em, alternate tune ‘em, voice lead ‘em. Dey’s uh, barre chords, altered chords, extended chords, moveable chords, cluster chords, slash chords, inversions, triads, diads. There’s jazz chords, power chords, blues chords, cowboy chords, block chords, open chords…”

Chord melody is not only a requisite skill for jazz guitarists, it’s also some of the most gratifying and enjoyable music that you can make all by yourself with your favorite instrument. Taking full advantage of the polyphonic qualities of guitar by playing both rhythm and melody simultaneously, and keeping it all in the groove, is certainly challenging but the learning curve flattens dramatically once you develop the foundational skills. Frank Vignola’s Essentials: Chord Melody Etudes will get you up and running quickly, with a series of etudes designed to impart the essential skill set. “In this edition of Essentials: Chord Melody Etudes, my goal is to give you a foundation to build on with eight chord melody etudes covering a range of keys and approaches.

Slash chords are an effective way of notating inversions of triads, extended harmonies and tension oriented sonorities. The concept of a triad over a bass note serves not only in the solo guitar realm, but also in an ensemble situation in which the bass note is played by the bass player thus freeing up the guitarist both technically and texturally to use major or minor triads in various inversions as a springboard for melodic fills. Another added benefit of viewing harmony via slash chords is the ease of determining which scales to apply for comping and soloing. In Slash Chord Science, Brad Carlton drills down deep on visualizing major and minor arpeggios and chord voicings over the entire fingerboard, understanding street key versus theoretical key analysis, chromatic bass line options under major and minor chords, and common slash chord formulas applied to bi-chordal progressions.
