Based on a story written by Leo Tolstoy in response to Ludwig van Beethoven's eponymous composition, director Bernard Rose's mature dissection of modern marriage tells the tale of a wealthy philanthropist (Danny Huston) who becomes intensely possessive of his wife (Elisabeth Röhm) – a beautiful and talented pianist.

British director Bernard Rose clearly has a thing for those two 19th-century giants of music and literature Beethoven and Tolstoy. He turned out a Beethoven biopic, Immortal Beloved, back in 1994; made a period adaptation of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (starring Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean) in 1997; and reworked Tolstoy’s story ‘The Death of Ivan Ilyich’ in a contemporary setting for 1999’s ivans xtc.
Now he brings his big passions together with The Kreutzer Sonata – a version of Tolstoy’s enigmatic 1889 novella, which was itself inspired by the eponymous Beethoven work.

The idea of arranging Janáček’s two string quartets for string orchestra has implicated two different approaches for me. The first is timbral; while the quartets’ ever-changing dramatics make it challenging to ‘resonate’ with the solo instruments in a string quartet, the collective sound of the orchestra adds a new dimension to the music.

HISTORICAL RECORDINGS · MONO · RECORDED IN *1930 & 1934 NEW REMASTERING FROM ORIGINAL MASTERS IN 24-BIT / 96KHZ BY STUDIO ART ET SON, PARIS. “You simply have to hear Huberman’s recording,” wrote Gramophone of this incandescent 1934 interpretation of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. At the age of 14 Huberman, born in Poland in 1882, had dazzled Brahms with his playing. The prodigy went on to become both a towering violinist and a committed humanitarian activist, rescuing musicians from Nazi Germany to form the future Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Completing this newly remastered Beethoven disc, Huberman is partnered in the Kreutzer Sonata by another legendary Polish-born musician, Ignaz Friedman.

There are two really famous Beethoven violin sonatas, the Kreutzer and the Spring. The Kreutzer Sonata inspired the story by Leo Tolstoy, which in turn became the subject of Janácek's First String Quartet, so if you're into comparative studies in the arts, there's a thesis topic for you! The Spring Sonata was featured in Woody Allen's Love and Death, among other places. And perhaps most intriguingly of all, the scherzo of the late sonata, Op. 96, turns up quite clearly in the third movement of Mahler's Second Symphony.

The duo of old friends James Ehnes and Andrew Armstrong has established itself as one of the most exciting of our times. Their albums of violin sonatas by Franck & Strauss, and Debussy, Elgar & Respighi have been praised by critics worldwide. For this new album they turn to Beethoven and two A major sonatas with very different moods. The 9th, ‘Kreutzer’ sonata, is a huge work, heroic and turbulent in character – a kind of concerto for violin and piano. It is middle period Beethoven at its most dramatic. By contrast, the 6th sonata is a serene, introspective work of great beauty which has tended to be overlooked by its more outward-looking siblings. The intimacy of this sonata – especially the slow movement - is all the more surprising as the original finale was removed by the composer, to become the finale of the ‘Kreutzer’. Beethoven wrote the gentle variations to conclude the 6th sonata.

Thousands of music enthusiasts are drawn each year to the Schwetzingen Festival in the time-honored walls of the beautiful Rokokotheater, an ideal place for Rossini's farse, his light one-act operas from the early part of his career. These operas already contain all the elements with which Rossini later took the music world by storm: melodic inventiveness, ingenious connections between sung lines and orchestral accompaniment, musical humor and emsembles using breathtakingly fast parlando singing. The witty and ironical relaization of these musical comedies by Michael Hampe and conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti with a great ensemble of singers was met with enthusiastic approval and makes the present recordings milestones in the still young Rossini videography and the very rare productions in this genre.
