This is a little-known and rather melancholy set, virtually Billy Strayhorn's only recording away from the world of Duke Ellington. The focus is totally on Strayhorn's piano throughout his interpretations of ten of his compositions (including "Lush Life," "Take the 'A' Train," and "Something to Live For"). Three selections have the Paris Blue Notes adding sparse wordless vocals, two other numbers add some quiet playing by the Paris String Quartet, and bassist Michel Goudret is on five of the ten selections (including one apiece with the strings and the voices). "Strange Feeling" and "Chelsea Bridge" are taken as unaccompanied piano solos. Of the ten songs, only "Just A-Sittin' and A-Rockin'" hints at happiness; otherwise, Strayhorn's melodic and concise playing is quite somber, peaceful in volume but filled with inner tension.

The O'Jays had an extensive recording career, taking in stints for several labels before they become big stars with their Philadelphia International hits in the 1970s. A large chunk of their pre-'70s discography was on Imperial, and this compilation contains 28 tracks they put out with the company between 1963 and 1966. Although some of these were low- to moderate-charting singles, the group really didn't hit either a commercial or artistic stride during this period. A lot of that was due to failing to find much of a musical identity. Some of the songs bridge doo wop with early soul; some are a little in an early New Orleans soul style, like their version of Allen Toussaint's "Lipstick Traces"; some are, like much soul of the time, very Motown-influenced, and some of the more orchestrated arrangements show the influence of hitmakers like the Righteous Brothers and the Drifters (whose "On Broadway" is heavily echoed by "I'm Gonna Make It").

An intelligent, articulate scholar, Harrison MacWhite, survives a hostile Senate confirmation hearing at the hands of conservatives to become ambassador to Sarkan, a southeast Asian country where civil war threatens a tense peace. He can't accept that anti-American sentiment might be a longing for self-determination and nationalism. So, he breaks from his friend Deong, a local opposition leader, ignores a foreman's advice about slowing the building of a road, and tries to muscle ahead. What price must the country and his friends pay for him to get some sense?

The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who managed to escape from an allegedly impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. At the beginning of the film, the Nazis gather all their most devious and troublesome POWs and place them at a new prison camp, which was designed to be impervious to escapes. Immediately, the prisoners develop a scheme where they will leave the camp by building three separate escape tunnels. Richard Attenborough is the British soldier who masterminds the whole plan, and who commands his motley squad–featuring Charles Bronson as a Polish trench-digging expert, James Garner as an American with a talent for theft, Donald Pleasence as a masterful forger, and Steve McQueen as an American rebel–through the construction of the tunnels and, eventually, their escape.
