While it does not feature all of their singles ("I Do You", "Private Number" and "You Better Dance" are missing), it is a great compilation featuring most of their bigger hits plus key album tracks, at a time when people still cared for those. The Jets consisted of members of the Wolfgramm family, a Tongan massive from Minneapolis, Minnesota. True to the Minneapolis Sound of the mid-1980's, this is full of nice keyboards and synths with the guilty pleasures of a great hit.

Believe is the 1989 album by Minneapolis R&B/pop group The Jets. This was The Wolfgramm's fourth and last album before being dropped by MCA Records but it did lead to their hit "You Better Dance".

Frank Zappa loved '50s doo wop music. He grew up with it, collected it, and it was the first kind of pop music he wrote (like "Memories of El Monte," recorded by the Penguins in 1962). Cruising With Ruben & the Jets, the Mothers of Invention's fourth LP, is a collection of such music, all Zappa originals (some co-written with MOI singer Ray Collins). To the unexperienced, songs like "Cheap Thrills," "Deseri," and "Jelly Roll Gum Drop" can sound like an average doo wop song.

A closer look reveals unusual chord sequences, Stravinsky quotes, and hilariously moronic lyrics – all that wrapped in four-way harmony vocals and linear piano triplets.

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention - Cruising With Ruben & The Jets (1968) {1995 Ryko Remaster}

Having blown the music world's mind with the Mothers, Frank Zappa made a left turn to indulge his childhood love of doo-wop. Recording with the rest of the Mothers, he created CRUISING WITH RUBEN & THE JETS, an album of "greasy love songs and cretin simplicity." It is also an album of authentically performed doo-wop songs that might have even been hits had they been recorded a decade earlier. From the falsetto voice singing of unrequited love, street-corner background harmonies and "Earth Angel"- styled narratives in "Love Of My Life " and "Deseri" to the questionable production values, Zappa accurately recreated the doo-wop sound. In the process, he proved that there was more to his talent than a crude sense of humor.

Hard to believe, but there's never been a good single-disc overview of Elton John's biggest hits available in America until 2007's 18-track Rocket Man: The Definitive Hits. (The American release subtracted one track and was titled Rocket Man: Number Ones.) He's had plenty of collections, including a good single-disc European set that circulated in the late '90s, but Rocket Man is the first to really offer a solid career-spanning overview as a single-disc set…

Along with other unsung rocksteady and early reggae producers like Herman Chin Loy, Rupie Edwards, Glen Brown, and Keith Hudson, Phil Pratt deserves wider recognition. Pratt first made a name for himself producing a very early Horace Andy vocal in 1966. Before that, Pratt (born George Philips) did a variety of odd jobs for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in the early '60s, building up a strong relationship with another Dodd associate, Lee Perry, in the process. Wanting initially to make it as a singer, Pratt eventually got the chance to cut a track for Dodd called "Safe Travel." Unfortunately for Pratt, Dodd decided not to release the song, citing his disappointment with the final version as the reason. Moving on, Pratt soon hooked up with Ken Lack and found some success with the song "Sweet Songs for My Baby" on the producer's Caltone label. Pratt proceeded to release four more cuts on Caltone and supplemented his session work by running Lack's Caltone label offshoot, Sunshot.
