The Woman Who Stole My Life

Marian Keyes "The Woman Who Stole My Life"
Michael Joseph | English | November 6, 2014 | ISBN: 0718155335 | 531 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 3,50 mb

Thank Goodness she's back! I was worried after 'Mercy Close' that Marian Keyes had gone off the boil like so many authors. I struggled big time with Mercy Close, found it slow, boring, and just well, silly. Did hesitate before purchasing this one, but am SO glad I did - it's every bit as funny and gripping as all of her previous books, possibly even better. I loved it! Loved the storyline, loved every character, and loved the laugh out loud humour.

Most people regard tax havens as being relevant only to celebrities, crooks and spivs, and mistakenly believe that the main offshore problems are money laundering and terrorist financing. These are only small parts of the whole picture. The offshore system has been (discreetly) responsible for the greatest-ever shift of wealth from poor to rich. It also undermines our democracies by offering the wealthiest members of society escape routes from tax, financial regulation, and other normal democratic controls.

A misfit high-school science teacher decides to build his own atomic bomb. He steals isotopes from a nuclear reactor and manages to create two warheads, but at the same time is present at a botched school-bus hijacking and is publicly coronated as a hero. Nevertheless, he uses the bombs to extort the police, first by demanding that baseball games be shown without commercial interruptions and then by having the Rolling Stones play in Japan despite their drug bust. Soon it's a race to see what wins first: the determined cop who's after him, the bomb he's carrying, or a burgeoning case of radiation poisoning…
