After Count Basie's death, his orchestra went through an expected period of turmoil, almost declaring bankruptcy and having a new short-term leader (the late trumpeter Thad Jones). By 1986 its fortunes had improved and under the leadership of tenor-saxophonist Frank Foster it has become the only "ghost" orchestra to still play viable music after the death of its leader. Long Live the Chief was recorded only weeks after Foster assumed command, but already his arrangements and leadership were giving fresh life to this great jazz institution. In addition to remakes of "April in Paris, " "Lil' Darlin', " "Corner Pocket" and "Shiny Stockings, " there was already some new material in the band's books…

This CD reissue dates from Thad Jones' single year of leadership of the Count Basie Orchestra before his health began to fail. Caterina Valente (best known as a pop singer) has a warm voice and sounds comfortable singing in a jazz-influenced middle-of-the-road style. There is little improvisation on the date and Thad Jones' arrangements leave surprisingly little space for solos; his only appearance on cornet is on "Solitude."

This video is simply fantastic on all counts. Two time Grammy Award winner Diane Schuur joins the Count Basie Orchestra in a wonderful concert recorded at the Rainbow Room in New York in 1987. The legendary Jazz vocalist whose lovely and pristine voice ehoes that of Ella Fitzgerald sings 14 wonderful tunes from the Jazz era of the 1940's and sings each song with the expertise and finess of the seasoned professional that she is. The lady with the sultry and crystal clear voice has been blind since birth and overcame her handicap to become one of the leading voices in Jazz. This performance is excellent and is one that you will enjoy tremendously. I only wish the video was longer yet the selections that she performed were brilliant. The Count Basie Orchestra did an outstanding job in backing her up they're really a terrific orchestra. This is Diane Schuur at her finest and if you're a fan of this Jazz legend you cannot miss this incredible live performance. Just like the title of this review this performance from Ms.Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra is a captivating hour of brilliance.

Her voice has deepened, matured–she sounds more like a blues singer at times than a "pop" singer–but Rosemary Clooney still has "it." Backed by one of the great jazz big bands, under the direction of trombonist Grover Mitchell, she serves up a piping hot platter of tunes, baked with recipes from The Great American Songbook. And the Basie band still practices its patented easygoing-but-assertive swing with style. Fans of Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme, as well as those who venerate the standards and big bands, will have a swell time "at long last".

Count Basie may have died in 1984 but his orchestra continues to roll on without any loss of quality. The 1992 edition was filled with strong soloists and swinging arrangements. Leader Frank Foster wrote most of the charts for this CD (including the fine four-part "Count Basie Remembrance Suite") . There are good individual features for Kenny Hing on tenor, trombonist Clarence Banks, electric guitarist Charlton Johnson and Foster himself ("Here's That Rainy Day") but it is the strong ensembles that make this a rewarding set. ~ Scott Yanow

Even without its original leader, the Count Basie Orchestra was at all times one of the finest jazz big bands in existence. During the '90s, Frank Foster kept the instantly recognizable sound while welcoming younger soloists and infusing the band's repertoire with new charts. This strong live program is typical of the Basie band during that time, performing older tunes (such as "Corner Pocket" and "Shiny Stockings") that alternate with newer and no less swinging originals.

Three years after Frank Foster had become leader of the Count Basie Orchestra, the group continued to place very well in jazz polls; few big bands were in its class. This fine CD finds Foster extending the tradition of Count Basie with new arrangements … Full Descriptionand features for both veterans (including trumpeter Sonny Cohn, altoist Danny Turner, and the tenors of Kenny Hing and Eric Dixon) and the newer members (such as trumpeter Byron Stripling and pianist Ace Carter).- Scott Yanow.

Count Basie does not appear on this disc. Frank Foster leads the Count Basie Orchestra.A post-Basie session from the Count Basie Orchestra – recorded after the Count had passed away, and Frank Foster returned from his wayward years to assume leadership of the group! The sound here is very much in the best Basie mode of the late 50s and early 60s – extremely fluid large group arrangements that absolutely sparkle.
