The whiplash, double-pronged Chungking Express is one of the defining works of nineties cinema and the film that made Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai an instant icon. Two heartsick Hong Kong cops (Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung), both jilted by ex-lovers, cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out restaurant stand, where the ethereal pixie waitress Faye (Faye Wong) works. Anything goes in Wong’s gloriously shot and utterly unexpected charmer, which cemented the sex appeal of its gorgeous stars and forever turned canned pineapple and the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’” into tokens of romantic longing.

“Confession of Pain” is the new, much hyped thriller from dynamic directing duo Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, best known for their work on the “Infernal Affairs” series. Unfortunately, the film has not fared too well at the hands of critics, though arguably this has been down not only to overly high hopes, but to the fact that the film, shrouded in secrecy for most of its production, had a great deal of its plot revealed before release, either through the press or though its cast, with actress Xu Jinglei annoyingly letting slip vital details regarding her character. Thankfully, the film remains highly enjoyable even for viewers forearmed with knowledge of its various twists and turns, and although uneven, it certainly provides enough in the way of thrills, spills and unlikely laughs to grab the attention.

In the effort to watch every film made by charismatic actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, this reviewer happened upon a 1995 stinker called School Days. A Taiwan-Hong Kong production, the film stars Kaneshiro as Eagle, a reformed rebel who still scares the bejesus out of all his classmates. His too-cool stoicism comes into play when new kid Jimmy Lin moves into town. He's from a rich family, is mighty cute, and dances real well during recess. Sadly, the evil bullies envy him, which leads to lots of…well, bullying. Thankfully, Eagle has his back, but not because he really gives a crap about the new kid; he just likes to stop people from bullying others. Somehow a friendship is born, and our heroes manage to go bungee-jumping. Meanwhile, the audience falls asleep or gets a high score on "Tetris" for their Game Boy. Yes, this garbage is made-to-order crap for twelve or thirteen year-old girls, but it lacks the depth of an ABC afterschool special, much less an entire feature film. Nothing that occurs in this film is worth your time, unless you simply have to watch every Takeshi Kaneshiro movie ever made. I thought I wanted to. After this movie, I didn't want to anymorefilm, when it's not.
