The music of Tin Hat is born of long-standing friendships and deep musical connections. It is subtle, introspective and generous, with the uncanny ability to be melancholy and joyful, sprightly and sinister. Collectively, the group's writing focuses on evocative melodies, subtle textures and elegant arrangements, moving through the musical languages of folk, classical, Americana, and countless others. "E. E. Cummings' language straddles the same aesthetic worlds as Tin Hat's music," says violinist Carla Kihlstedt, whose remarkable singing is at the center of the group's latest project, The Rain is a Handsome Animal: an album of songs using Cummings's visionary modernist poetry as lyrics.

Musically, as Rapoon, Robin Storey has been treading dangerously close to the edges of damnation. Tin of Drum is the culmination of years of flirtation and preparation. If, indeed, there is a hell in the afterlife, Storey has created the soundtrack. This CD is as deep and as dark as it gets. Anything that is deeper and darker is no longer music. The atmospheres are bleak and hopeless. There are moments of brief respite when the spirit lifts up to merely evil. This absolute masterpiece is as scary as, well, hell! It will appeal to fans of Jeff Greinke, Laszlo Hortobagyi, and Lustmord.

A remarkable recording for many reasons, the debut of Tin Machine predates by nearly half a decade much of the guitar-oriented alternative pop that followed the grunge explosion of 1991-1992. This does not sound like Bowie in a band; missing are the quirkiness and theatrics that characterize much of Bowie's solo work…

The second (and essentially final) Tin Machine installment finds the group polishing up their sound significantly making a well-produced collection of songs. Many songs – notably "Amlapura" or "Goodbye Mr. Ed" – come as less than raucous rock songs (as heard on the previous record) but more as sonic works of art…

Partially growing out of their success in the country they were named after, as well as growing friendship and affiliation with such bands as Yellow Magic Orchestra, Japan, on Tin Drum, made its most unique, challenging, and striking album. It was also the final full studio effort from the group, and what a way to bow out – there was practically no resemblance to the trash glam flailers on Adolescent Sex anymore. Rather than repeat the sheer restraint on Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Tin Drum is an album of energy, Sylvian's singing still the decadently joyful thing it is, but the arrangements and performances tight, full, and active.
