His face was more famous than his voice, but Robert Goulet recorded a string of popular albums for Columbia during the 1960s, striking the pop charts with several hits and earning a 1962 Grammy Award. Born in 1933 in Lawrence, MA, Goulet was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, where he first studied acting and singing as a teenager. He appeared on Canadian television in the early '50s, but moved to New York and by the end of the decade was fit into a prime Broadway role: Sir Lancelot, in Lerner & Loewe's Camelot (with Julie Andrews and Richard Burton). A starring role in several films proved less than successful, however. He began singing in the early '60s as well, and after an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, Goulet signed to Columbia in 1962.

Bassist Jim Ferguson does something on Deep Summer Music and his 1999 debut, Not Just Another Pretty Bass, that few on his instrument can muster. And it's so simple, so dynamic. He sings. Well, he not only sings, but he offers up a pliable voice that can wrap around a lyric like a hug (try the lovely title tune here), and then morph into a playful, sardonic, jab-rich vehicle that shows off how much style he has. With Chris Potter by his side again on Summer, Ferguson shows clearly that he's no singer handling a bass. He plays his big axe with all the same flexibility, using a singing note-hold that bends around the melodies sweetly, and then a thumping rhythmic bounce that accentuates how groovy a cat Ferguson is. "What's A Guy Supposed to Do?" sounds as humorously exasperated as Mose Allison. The comparison to Mose is apt, for Ferguson has that same slight drawl and crisp funkiness. And he has a vocal range that can bellow near a baritone and still have some grit at the bottom to keep things textured smartly. A most important follow-up to Ferguson's auspicious debut.

By the end of the '70s, the Beach Boys were turning into a novelty act with their live shows and spewing forth easily forgettable records. One would have hoped that with the emergence of a new decade the group would have adapted a fresh outlook and returned to its former levels of creativity.

Roxy Music’s self-titled debut was originally released in 1972 to critical acclaim and exemplified the band’s penchant for glamour, both in the lyrics and with the album cover of model Kari-Ann Muller, kickstarting a tradition of iconic album covers featuring female models. "The album is really kind of a tracer as to where we could go," explains Ferry. "There are lots of different directions there, and deliberately so, because we never really did want to have one recognisable sound. Being elusive is one of the things we quite like, and being as varied as possible."

Perhaps in search of further profits from the lode provided by its popular New Year's events, the Vienna Philharmonic established its Sommernachtskonzert or Summer Night Concert series in 2004. The series attracted six-digit crowds, sponsorship from Rolex, and U.S. broadcasts on the Public Broadcasting Service. The Philharmonic has aimed for something in between the party atmosphere of the New Year's concerts and the sobriety of a regular concert event, with star conductors trotted out for not-too-strenuous fun. Here is Zubin Mehta, leading an almost all-Scandinavian program, with much-honored Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder in the headline work: the Grieg Piano Concert in A minor, Op. 16. Some wouldn't pick him as a likely candidate for Grieg (his specialties run toward Beethoven and Mozart), and the concerto is straightforward, but no more.

The man who popularized wordless vocal choruses and light orchestral accompaniment on a mix of popular standards and contemporary hits of the 1960s, Ray Conniff was a trombone player for Bunny Berigan's Orchestra and Bob Crosby's Bobcats before being hired as an arranger by Mitch Miller for Columbia Records in 1954. After he wrote the charts for several sizeable Columbia hits during the mid-'50s, Conniff became a solo artist as well, applying his arranging techniques to instrumental easy listening for the booming adult album market. The result, 12 Top Ten LPs and well over 50 million total albums sold, cemented his status as one of the top LP sellers of all time, but his increasingly watered-down and commercially focused arrangements gained few young fans by the end of the '60s.
