As a solo artist and as the lead singer of the Babys and Bad English, John Waite was a fixture of album-oriented rock radio stations during the '70s and '80s. Waite had a talent for power ballads and driving arena rock, occasionally touching on new wave-styled power pop as well. Though he didn't consistently have hits, several of his songs including "Missing You," the Babys' "Isn't It Time," and Bad English's "When I See You Smile" became radio staples.

On this album from the Ébène Quartet, it's Brazil as you've never heard it before. Following their acclaimed Jazz/rock/pop fusion album Fiction (one of NPR's Top Albums, all genres 2011), the Ébène Quartet have made a mixture of bossa nova and samba, shaken up into an intoxicating cocktail of rhythms and melodies from a diverse range of cultures, countries, and musical traditions. Music includes the score from Terry Gilliam's 1985 film Brazil, Argentinian tango, and numbers by a variety of song writers such as Stevie Wonder, Sting, and Charlie Chaplin. Joining the Ébène Quartet to add even more spice to an already stellar album are French singer-songwriter Bernard Lavilliers and the stylish American jazz singer Stacey Kent.

Stacey Dooley returns to the Philippines to make a complex and chilling film about Filipino mothers who sexually abuse children, often their own, live in front of webcams in exchange for money. For one week Stacey gets unique access to Mike, an undercover Special Agent from ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and follows a secret operation in which HSI hope to arrest several mothers who are selling their own children for sex. These women not only perform live sex shows, but also traffic their children for hands-on abuse to travelling paedophiles - many of whom come from the US and the UK.

John Waite's second solo album, No Brakes, reached the Top Ten, almost entirely on the strength of "Missing You," a truly perfect single. It was a hell of an act to follow, and Waite couldn't quite deliver, at least until he re-teamed with former Baby Jonathan Cain in the late '80s with Bad English. During those years in the wilderness – roughly 1985 through 1990 – he released two albums, 1985's Mask of Smiles and 1987's Rover's Return, which are combined on this CD reissue.

John Waite's stardom as a member of the Babys was nothing compared to what would follow when Waite's solo career finally took off, yet it took a little effort for that career to gain momentum. Waite released his first solo album, Ignition, in the summer of 1982. Two years later, Waite returned with No Brakes, an album that had success in its sights.
