Jean-Efflam Bavouzet is starting a complete, chronological survey of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, to run parallel with his complete Haydn sonatas series. This first box set covers the sonatas composed in the 1790s. Two further volumes, of middle and late sonatas respectively, will follow in 2013 and 2014. Each three-disc box set in the series will be available as the price of two CDs. In a recent cover feature in International Piano, Michael Church spoke with the pianist about the new project and reported: ‘For Bavouzet, the particular pleasure of coming to Beethoven after Haydn lies in the fact that although their basic harmonic language is roughly the same, in Beethoven’s scores the dynamics are clearly indicated, especially where they seem completely independent of the music’s so-called natural harmonic tensions.’ Bavouzet added: ‘The accents are in exactly the wrong place, and that’s what creates his music’s excitement. I am so happy to have these two streams of my work running side by side for the next few years.’

One of the most enigmatic figures in rock history, Scott Walker was known as Scotty Engel when he cut obscure flop records in the late '50s and early '60s in the teen idol vein. He then hooked up with John Maus and Gary Leeds to form the Walker Brothers. They weren't named Walker, they weren't brothers, and they weren't English, but they nevertheless became a part of the British Invasion after moving to the U.K. in 1965. They enjoyed a couple of years of massive success there (and a couple of hits in the U.S.) in a Righteous Brothers vein. As their full-throated lead singer and principal songwriter, Walker was the dominant artistic force in the group, who split in 1967. While remaining virtually unknown in his homeland, Walker launched a hugely successful solo career in Britain with a unique blend of orchestrated, almost MOR arrangements with idiosyncratic and morose lyrics. At the height of psychedelia, Walker openly looked to crooners like Sinatra, Jack Jones, and Tony Bennett for inspiration, and to Jacques Brel for much of his material. None of those balladeers, however, would have sung about the oddball subjects – prostitutes, transvestites, suicidal brooders, plagues, and Joseph Stalin – that populated Walker's songs.

Quartet Records presents a new, remastered edition of two Ennio Morricone scores from 1969/1970, written for movies featuring strong female protagonists. Directed by Eriprando Visconti, La monaca di Monza (1969) is widely credited as one of the cornerstones of the nunsploitation subgenre which bloomed in the 1970s. Based on a true story about Sister Virginia de Leyva, the film is about a nun who starts a forbidden romance with an Italian nobleman. Set in the tumultuous 17th century, the film features a brief but passionate Morricone score, highlighted by a tragic romantic theme, a lovely pastoral theme for the couple’s child and Baroque-flavored action cues for the Spanish pursuers. Made a year later, Alberto Bevilacqua’s La califfa (1970) stars Romy Schneider and Ugo Tognazzi in a forbidden romance with a more contemporary setting. Based on the director’s own novel, the story follows the romance of an industrialist and the widow of a worker who used to work in his factory. The 20-page full-color booklet features many illustrations and a detailed discussion of both scores by Gergely Hubai, who also provides trackby- track analyses for these masterful works.

Hausmusik’s performance of the Mendelssohn Octet comes with the advantage of a sensibly steady tempo for the famous scherzo, allowing for maximum transparency and lightness; and a dazzling finale in which for once the cello’s first scurrying fugal entry sounds crystal clear. The First String Quintet, and the Op. 13 Quartet – Mendelssohn’s homage to the late quartets of the recently deceased Beethoven – are also miraculous products of the composer’s teenage years. The Quintet is quite beautifully done here, but the Quartet, like the late Quintet, Op. 87, is rather lacking in tension and urgency. Woldemar Bargiel was Schumann’s brother-in-law. For all its obvious weaknesses, his Octet contains some attractive ideas, and Divertimenti’s performance makes a strong case for it. Divertimenti is impressive in the Mendelssohn, too – though its finale is not quite as exhilarating as Hausmusik’s; and in the last resort neither group can quite match the élan of the ASMF Chamber Ensemble.

Classical music is not supposed to be fun, right? And yet, every concert of the Philharmonix is a living, grooving, finger-snapping testament to the contrary. And who exactly is having fun here? Is it the seven world-class musicians who get to play the kind of repertoire one would never see on the playbill of their legendary orchestras? Or is it the audience, whose eyes light up at their sparkling display of virtuosity and passion?
