If John Ford is the greatest Western director, The Searchers is arguably his greatest film, at once a grand outdoor spectacle like such Ford classics as She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950) and a film about one man's troubling moral codes, a big-screen adventure of the 1950s that anticipated the complex themes and characters that would dominate the 1970s. John Wayne gives perhaps his finest performance in a role that predated screen antiheroes of the 1970s; by the film's conclusion, his single-minded obsession seems less like heroism and more like madness. The Searchers paved the way for such revisionist Westerns as The Wild Bunch (1969) and McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), and its influence on movies from Taxi Driver (1976) to Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Star Wars (1977) testifies to its lasting importance.

John Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier who returns to his brother Aaron's frontier cabin three years after the end of the Civil War. Ethan still has his rebel uniform and weapons, a large stash of Yankee gold, and no explanations as to where he's been since Lee's surrender. A loner not comfortable in the bosom of his family, Ethan also harbors a bitter hatred of Indians (though he knows their lore and language well) and trusts no one but himself. Ethan and Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), Aaron's adopted son, join a makeshift band of Texas Rangers fending off an assault by renegade Comanches.

Mobile Fidelity reissued two of the Searchers' best albums, It's the Searchers and Take Me for What I'm Worth, on one CD. Although these are among the Searchers' best records, they are still uneven albums, which means casual fans will be better served by hits collections. Besides, this gold disc carries such a high retail price that it will only be of interest to hardcore fans. Chances are they won't be disappointed with the investment, since the remastering is very good, but they should be prepared for the steep ticket price. ~Allmusic

Ethan Edwards, returned from the Civil War to the Texas ranch of his brother, hopes to find a home with his family and to be near the woman he obviously but secretly loves. But a Comanche raid destroys these plans, and Ethan sets out, along with his 1/8 Indian nephew Martin, on a years-long journey to find the niece kidnapped by the Indians under Chief Scar. But as the quest goes on, Martin begins to realize that his uncle's hatred for the Indians is beginning to spill over onto his now-assimilated niece. Martin becomes uncertain whether Ethan plans to rescue Debbie…or kill her.

It used to be, with reissues of the Searchers' classic Pye Records sides, that the challenge was getting them to sound good. Since 20-bit and 24-bit remastering have become the norm, however, the only challenge for Sanctuary Records (or the Sequel and Castle Records imprints) seems to be how inexpensive they can make the group's U.K. CDs, and also how many different reissues and compilations they can get out on the group's Pye Records library of around 100 songs – after all, this three-CD set is at least the second triple-decker career survey of the group put out by the label since the 1980s.

While its musical classification, influences, and origins are debated, Brown is regarded as the fundamental force behind the creation of go-go music.
