I remember back when Herbert Khaury kicked the bucket, 20 years ago this month. Everyone was wondering who would be the next Tiny Tim? Who would save the ukulele from itself? Some said it would be Jim Beloff, but that guy’s too square to do anything. Some said it would be Keiji Haino, but he wouldn’t sing words. And so, here, two decades out, we have finally decided to toss the crown to Angela Sawyer.
This new album, On the Pedestrian Side, has been compared to a more stripped down version of the work Ms. Sawyer does with Exusamwa, and there is a certain sense to that. But a canny listener will be drawn to the uke tunes here, and their similarity to the Great Tim, in terms of both approach and gobble. Without having any idea of where most of the songs performed here originate, I can still state that they sound (at least in part) like Peter Stampfel’s long-proposed survey of 20th Century popular music. In and out through imaginary decades of style and form, they resemble ape-moments of everything from Britney Spears to Fabian to David Sedaris’ version of Billie Holiday to Little Marcie to Lucille Bogan on helium, etc.

For a long time, bassist David Ambrosio has been a vital part of the jazz scene in New York City and his playing has been documented on many releases, including the wonderful trio recordings by pianist Eri Yamamoto. In 2014, a new chapter began in Ambrosio's story when he released his first album as a leader on Fresh Sound New Talent: Gone. Here, he was in the good company of alto saxophonist Loren Stillman and drummer Russ Meissner. Both of them return on Ambrosio's second release in his own name, Moments in Time, with Meissner as the co-leader of the project.

The ultimate contemporary jazz hyphenate Russ Freeman (guitarist/arranger/producer/keyboardist/composer) became one of smooth jazz's most influential artists through magnificent projects like this one, chosen by Jazziz as the best contemporary jazz album of all time. This third Ripps release is a masterpiece of mouthwatering pop-jazz tunes, featuring strong hooks, gorgeous texturing, and styles ranging from tropical (the sunny "Aruba" featuring Rob Mullins on keys and Carl Anderson scatting away) and Brazilian ("One Summer Night in Brazil," Freeman's lush centerpiece) to soulful (a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together")…

There are some albums which have left their mark on rock music for good. Some albums which gave inspiration to thousands of musicians so as to play, write and record music for the first time. Such an album is Russ Ballard's homonymous release which came out in 1984. 1984 was a time when music did rule the radio waves. Not fancy cover artworks, or album titles etc… just music, which was more important than everything else. Russ released an album which was meant to become a classic. You see the 80s was the time when the most rock/hard rock classic albums were released.
