Fans call him 'The African Sting', writers call him a pro, but it is his unique and electrifying style of connecting with his audience that makes him what he really is - a true musician. Richard Bona's seemingly effortless voice, fierce skill on the bass, unique songwriting/arranging expertise and ability to learn just about any instrument simply from watching, position him as a rare African artist to have established an unscalable reputation on an international platform. This has led to a host of awards, along with fruitful collaborations with colleagues such as Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, John Legend and Stevie Wonder.

Yet another of Harry Belafonte's proteges who later made a big name for himself, Cameroon's Richard Bona takes time out from his ace session bass life to make another remarkably versatile, impeccably polished solo album, Munia: The Tale, his first on Verve. While Bona allows rock, jazz, funk, and Brazilian influences through the window, the melodies and rhythmic patterns are still strongly rooted in West Africa, always permeating the atmosphere. On some of the tracks, Bona needs no help at all to make an impression, layering on his vocals over his bass, guitars, keyboards, and percussion in an exquisitely controlled one-man show. He often does so with the subtle shading and dabs of color of a pianter, like the gentle Moog lines that seep into the background of "Dina Lam."

The Vienneseborn Carl Czerny, student and confidant of Beethoven and teacher of Liszt, found fame in his native city by writing a series of fashionable pieces, among which numbered fantasies and potpourris as well as a series of important pedagogic studies. His large-scale pianistic works are of great interest and include the First Piano Concerto, in D minor, which expertly balances foreboding, pastoral richness and exuberant brio, a bravura Introduzione e Rondo Brillant and a vivacious salute to Webers Euryanthe. Tuck is dazzlingly articulate and secure in the countless runs and fast passagework Czerny asks of her, wrote MusicWeb International of 8.573417. This is a world-premiere recording.
