In 1994, Klaus Schulze was able to look back on a long, successful and highly influential career, but he was also able to embrace the new. He was in the midst of his 'digital phase', fascinated by sampling technology, and had a clear idea of where he could go with the technology, which resulted in albums like 'Beyond Recall'; the Royal Festival Hall recordings; 'The Dome Event' and even to an extent his opera 'Totentag'. By contrast Peter Kuhlman a.k.a Pete Namlook had just started.

With the first 4Voice back in 1992 Fax innovated trance music by adding massive melodic and harmonic structures to pure minimalistic 4/4 beat oriented music of this time. 4Voice III is a further chapter in this musical area with a high impact of beat oriented ambient sounds. Dedicated to "The Place of Mankind" in the vast universe, this recording has a strong concept character, and drives through space from ambient to trance to lounge and back to trance music.

With XL1, Pete Shelley integrates layers of guitar into the electronic synth-pop he essayed on his solo debut, Homosapien. While the result isn't quite as bracing as its predecessor, the music benefits from the guitar – it sounds edgier, making the record fairly captivating. There's still some weak material on the record, but "Telephone Operator" and "If You Ask Me (I Won't Say No)" are terrific, ranking among Shelley's best.
